I've followed this but not in super detail and have general questions for those who have done the mod or know more about it.

Does the availability of parts for the 2020s that have this from the factory bring any changes or advantages to this mod? Are there 2020 parts (wiring, connectors, etc.) that make this mod any easier or better now?

I took a quick look and found 2020 handles but haven't gotten back to it to look for connectors/wires and such.

    Thanks for any info.

The 2020 handle should be the same, toyota only makes two handles, a smart one and a dumb one and they can be installed anywhere.
Most likely the wiring connectors will also be the same as what the 2016-2019s already use in the drivers side, the biggest difference with the 2020s is the computer is programmed to allow a second smart handle to operate independently of the drivers door.

    OK, thanks for the info.

I wonder if the change to the 2020 computer would allow someone doing the mod to wire the passenger handle to a different connection point? Perhaps on the passenger side rather than running it over to the drivers?

The main thing I was curious about was whether or not the addition of the passenger side smart handle on the 20’s might have resulted in an ‘OEM wiring harness’ going from the passenger handle, to some plug and play connection point rather than having to do the manual wiring like before.

In other words, did the change to the 2020s result in an OEM cable or harness that can be purchased along with the handle rather than doing your own wiring?

    thanks!

I would think it would now be possible to wire into "new" 2020 wiring on the passenger side if Toyota wired it that way. But it ain't too difficult to do it the old way. As long as the wiring at the ECU is still the same. Either way, I probably wouldn't do this mode on a 2020 until I was sure of the wiring. Smoking a wiring harness ain't fun not to mention funding a new ECU.

However, I guess I confused myself. If someone has a 2020, why would they want to do this mod other than to wire in the rear door handles? Maybe all 2020s don't have this?

Running the wire from passenger side to the ecu is the easiest part of this mod. Using a factory toyota part (if even available), would be much more expensive, much more time consuming, and wouldn’t affect function.

2020 with smart handle has a separete loom and connector going to the passenger door. I have the pic but on my PC. Power is out overhere due to earthquake.

We can currently buy the parts to make the factory harness connect in the same way the 2020s do, but even though we are adding factory wiring in the correct spot it won’t make the door work as the computer isn’t programmed for the extra door. Trust me, we have tried it.
Getting the factory 2020 wiring will still require you to cut off the connector or pins on the computer end and use taps to connect to the wiring for the drivers handle. The connector for the passenger handle is being fabricated already with parts listed in this thread, so even though Toyota has a 2020 factory wiring harness, it still doesn’t help or accomplish much for us.

@Victory, have you done the passenger's side unlock n lock parallel to driver side?

I haven’t done the wiring version you came up with, I can see the value in it, but for me I still want all the doors to unlock anyway so haven’t had the need to change it up, but we have tried making the passenger side independent with no luck.

Has anyone tried swapping the certification ECU meant for a 2020 into a pre-2020 truck?

I don’t think anyone has tried this, not sure you could really find one at anywhere close to a reasonable price yet.
I believe when it was discussed in the past though the consensus was it still may not work until the main vehicle ecu was reprogrammed. Most likely at this point your better off doing a trade in on a 2020 if this is something you want that badly.

All data still pointing to @Victory being correct.
Assuming i am not incompetent, 2020 Security ECU appears to be the same P/N as previous. So I think our previous guess that the security ECU being activated for passenger by the main ECUs is correct.

Again, my first quick look at the parts catalog without looking at schematics

All true. But having a part number for a complete "add-on" harness will make a few here happier.

Yeah but it still wouldn’t be any more plug and play than what we have currently since it would still need to tap into the drivers side handle wiring at the ecu.

I just came here to say this is still by far the best and most used/loved mod I’ve dont to any vehicle. Beats the piss out of the light bars bumpers yada yada. Everytime I use it I’m like “hell yeah”. So if you’ve come to this thread and are on the fence DO ITTTTTTTT

Goes to the same pins on the computer as we thought it would (same as the highlander) unfortunately it isn’t just about wiring, the computer must be programmed as well.

So if it vehicle is approached on the passenger side, only that door opens? I haven't been able to witness this...yet. Have you?

On the highlander yes if the setting is set to only drivers door or only passenger door vs all door settings. I’m assuming the taco will be the same.
