You can download the techstream copy that has been used by many people here, (several people have it in their signature, etc), and use only the cable from Amazon....

But yes, it isnt easy plug and play, that is for sure

So couple of things I would like to share and perhaps help those who hasn’t done this mod as of yet. I believe everyone has complained that the pins for the handle are hard to push into the housing and some suggested to use a flat screw driver to pushed them in. They both only go one way without any force at all. Luckily enough my first one went inside butter smooth and the second one stopped me from going in, so I tried to rotate the pin wire until it went in smooth like the first one did (same orientation).

When routing the wires thru the boot, I did it from the outside and massage the boot so that the wire will loose it grip from the accordion groves. (If that makes sense)

Inside the the door handle to the right I noticed that there is another “slot” that the wires can rest upon. Once in place, I route the wire all the way down behind the window rails and noticed that the crash bar bracket had a hole and ziptide it to it to prevent the wire from moving.

lastly, the gooey black adhesive holding the plastic in place was easy to figure out. I used a single blade knife to cut in between taking it out effortlessly and without making any mess.

I haven’t connected the wires to the passenger side as of yet, I read through again just to make sure I’m not missing anything. However, I was wondering if someone figure out if tapping the tailgate harness from the passenger side will work instead of routing the wires to the driver side(?) I purchased the OEM open/close tailgate harness just fyi. I much rather tap on the passenger side than the driver side. Pictures below for your convenience. Any help would be appreciated!

Any idea if tapping the tailgate harness from the passenger side will work instead of routing the wires to the driver side? I purchased the OEM open/close tailgate harness and can take pictures of the harness if necessary. I noticed that the OEM harness was meant for the 2019 and 2020 models, but they work for any model year. I know @baldbeardedtaco and @caribe makaira where brainstorming this scenario but I don’t see any confirmation whether this is possible or not.

From all I've read on this... it HAS to be on the driver side. Remember, you're trying to tap into the ECU (Electronics Control Unit) that "senses" the door handle... not the lock/unlock signal.

That’s what I was assuming but I rather be sure before wrapping up this mod. Thanks!

The Smart Handle wires need to be routed to the driver's side to the Certification ECU connector.
The tailgate "tap" is meant to divide the unlock signal to the Passenger door, so when the added smart handle is used on the passenger's side making the driver's side unlock, the passenger's door also unlocks.

Smart handle, housing connector, and wires arrived over the weekend. The inferno handle was noticeably darker than my truck. I ordered it online from a local dealer about an hour away, so I made the trip to return it. Return went smoothly. One thing I didn't include when ordering was the VIN. So I just ordered another one, this time I included the VIN. Don't know if it will make a difference, but we will see.

Picture doesn’t really show the true color difference.

I thought the same too on my INFERNO, but once I installed it and had it on for months... I don't notice the difference. I notice the fender flares being a different shade a lot more than the new door handle.

I have to say the color shade on my truck is pretty much the same whether it is on the plastic or metal. I have seen some 2016 inferno that were darker than mine, about the same shade as the handle I ordered. We'll see when the new handle arrives. :notsure:

Update- I finished doing this mod last night and it didn't work at first. I checked every connection to make sure everything was in place. A HUGE shout out to @caribe makaira for all his help and advise on this process and @Victory for making this easy thread available to all of us. He quote that the handle get installed inverted to what it would be on the driver's side. So what I did was to invert the cables and worked flawlessly!:yay:
