Great idea Jake!!! I’m just afraid that being rubber may loose a little over time with the vibration of the truck etc. An aluminum washer may be better(?)

Aluminum washers or shims may indeed work better, just a bit of trial and error getting the right thickness. I'm pretty confident the o-ring will hold up though. High quality, high temp and I can squish it to right where I want it(the bolt is tighter now than when I disassembled to install the smart handle).

That's good! Whats the dimension/brand etc of the o-ring you got for those who want to buy the same one?

Honestly I have no idea, I randomly pulled that o-ring out of a bag of parts off my duramax. I'd guess its about 1/16th" think and you'd want around 5/16th ID. Mine was far larger in diameter than needed so it took some finagling to keep centered when tightening the bolt.

Great job! The only hesitation I have with the sticky anchors is that with the heat, they may come loose down the road.

They may but I'll cross that bridge when/if I get there. Nice to finally have it done. I still cant believe they didn't come from the factory this way.

Hey members. I currently have this mod on my truck. I am thinking about changing my headunit out. My question is if I buy a new aftermarket headunit, will this mod still work since its a setting on the OEM headunit?

As long as you have a Maestro with it. The settings may stay without out, but with the Maestro you can at least still access all those settings and change them.

Mods: Is this still a Tacoma?
That's a really great question...hopefully someone who has actually switched headunits out that also has this mod can chime in...as stated, the last settings you had in your OEM headunit may be what you have when you swap as I would imagine the headunit is only writing the data to the control modules/ECU and reading it from there as the headunit is only a display, not a logic controller. It's just a gateway/HMI to where the data/settings are actually written/read/stored. With that said, without Maestro, you MAY be stuck with the last settings you had through the OEM unit or else there are other options like techstream and so on to access and change the data after the fact.

I have had two aftermarket headunits in my truck. I'm pretty sure both of them experienced this modification. At the very least my current one did. The first one had the Maestro and everything was fine. My current one is an overseas headunit and has a CANBUS adapter and everything works fine. Well, other than the bad English in the headunit. :D

Thanks for the the information. Since you were able to still use this mod with aftermarket headunit, I guess I will start looking for one.

No problem! I don't know what your budget is, but there's a new one from Pioneer that people seem to be liking. It's the 6600 something or other. There's a thread on here somewhere.
