Exactly! Something like lock and unlock from every door would probably be more needed on a utility style vehicle like the Tacoma, I would think.

I guess it could be worse. I have rented a few Mazda vehicles with smart key but to open the doors, you need to pull out your keyfob. No opening up by touching the handle. Too me, why even bother making it a smart key if you gotta take the key out of your pocket to unlock the doors. That is stupid!

So could it be that for the Tacoma and the Highlander, the handles are the same? Just some of the Highlander colors are not available on the Tacoma and vice-versa. Also, if you were to just purchase a Drivers side Tacoma handle and turn it around on the pass side, it will work the same? When I get my truck back from the recall, i will need to open up the door panels and remove the drivers side handle to see if it would work on the pass side. That would be interesting. Also need to see if there is a proximity receiver on the drivers side that will also need to be installed on the pass side. More research.....

I have a 2016 Highlander and the handles look the same, looks like it was just flipped for driver/passenger.

Yes, 2017 Highlander and Tacoma here. Handles are the same except for color options.

Not to highjack the thread, but I'm baffled that the Tacoma didn't come with power/adjustable seats. It was close to the same price for the Tacoma and the Highlander.

Yes, and I reprogrammed mine so when I pull the driver side handle, the passenger side unlocks. I've had 5 Tacomas and amazed at my 17.

Damn $150!! I'll wait for a wrecked on. Passenger is the same as driver just flipped over. Finding the harness will be tricky.

I tell ya, once you start in on all these bells and whistles it's easy to get hooked. Rear cross traffic alert saves me all the time. I think all the safety features should be mandatory on all vehicles.

I hear ya. Before my wife got her Lexus, none of our cars had push button start, RCTA, and all those other bells and whistles. Now, I cannot buy another car without the push button start. Also, since the BSM/RCTA was available as an option, that was the only configuration I was shopping for. But yes, I try not to depend on the safety gizmos all the time, but it has avoided some close calls.

Yea my Lex has every conceivable option but that's full on luxury and it's a hybrid but it's meant to pamper. I think of my truck as a tool with a service purpose so I don't mind a couple "manual" quirks.

I do agree with everyone that if a Corolla can have so many bells and whistles that everything above that price point should too.

Whole bunch of stuff in my garage
Totally going to resurrect this thread...

Has anyone tried purchasing a second driver's side handle and installing it on the passenger side? The handle will work on either side, touch to lock points are on top and bottom.

I was always planning on digging into it but haven’t had the chance.
You would need to get or make a wiring harness to plug into the door lock cpu. From the research I did on making the Lexus Credit Card Key work, it appears there should be the open ports needed. Of course you could probably tap into the wiring on your driver side, but then the locks would open together, you wouldn’t be able to have one locked and one unlocked.

Also, while we know the ridges are on both the top and the bottom, do we know if it would actually mount upside down? The back of the handle with the smart key tech is not simetrical. It may mount upside down, but mounting points may also be different.

I've got a smart handle on the way. I'll post up my findings once I get it all apart. My goal is to find the OEM connector, and make up my own PNP T harness that will daisy chain the New pass side smart handle into the existing drivers side.
