Very interested in this, but sadly it seems like a very tall order.

So unfortunately Ive been super busy lately, gotten into season for me, I probably haven’t been on the forum in over a month and so I haven’t had time to get back into this, but I still think it is possible, probably (hopefully) without too much more work, in fact I still have a (non working) smart handle on my passenger door.

March and April are going to continue to be busy months for me, hoping someone else gets a chance to get on this, otherwise I’ll be back when I can.

Thanks for your hard work, even if it doesn't work. I wonder if a Techstream setting...,but probably wishful thinking. Anybody know where that ECU is, next time I am in the dash...

It is just below and to the left of the steering wheel. It has three wiring harnesses going into it.

    Thanks
Been focusing on the 4wd ECUs on the passenger side (2wd Low and Rear Lock anytime). Let me mention thank you for the work on the Lexus card key, use it and love it.
You don't happen to have a schematic for that ECU for other vehicle models that have more than 1 door lock/unlock handle? The ECU p/n are the same per my memory from Lexus key discussion, so either the wires that are connected to the ECU let it know to use multiple handles (like 0 specific grounded pin = 1 door control, 1 specific grounded pin = 2 door control.) I hope we might learn of harness differences that way from comparing the two schematics.
If that isn't it, it would have to be some communication on the CAN I would assume...

I do have the wiring diagram from a highlander, I’ll have to dig it up.
It still doesn’t work when connected though when you add pins to the connector where the Highlander shows the pinout for the passenger handle even though the pins are in that location in the ecu, so either those pins aren’t connected to the circuit board (I haven’t had a chance to pull the unit and pop it open) or more likely there is a firmware issue.

I'd rather not think of all the $ spent :(
Same, our 2012 4Runner has the touch on the passenger door, but not my 2017. It would be nice when loading groceries or kids

Understood, but if I recall correctly the actual ECU P/N is the same on the highlander as ours, so I have to assume the pins are connected internally to the ECU on our truck. My full thoughts are dependant on that memory, so if it's wrong; ideas -> window

So that leaves firmware or some other way the ECU can figure out which vehicle it's in. I doubt its the firmware loaded in the box, because 2 different incompatible firmwared boxes wouldn't have same P/N I think?

    One possiblilty
So it could be the wires connected to the ECU tell it which vehicle. I have experienced on toyota head units, particular grounded wires indicate aux capabilities, etc. these functions are active in other models, so I believe same part can identify the vehicle/functions based on the harness its plugged into.

Another possibility is the CAN bus data lets the ECU figure it out. And we can't fix that.

A third possibility is somehow in Techstream. Most likely is that when you reset the ECU (such as wipe all keys) it figures it out from Techstream, and we are not fixing that...

If we are lucky it might be the first, but hopes aren't up too high....

As far as the part numbers go, I believe I remember the part number on the ecu box itself is the same, but Toyota sells it as an assmbly with the brackets, which of course means the part numbers are different, most likely only because the brackets are different, but maybe there is a chance it could be because the firmware loaded is different as well? Unfortunately programming is outside my expertise, but Ill try.

Is there anyway to just connect to the existing wires that go right to the drivers side instead of dealing with ecu or anything related? Wouldnt the passenger side just think it was the drivers side? just curious. hell I want to put lights on my truck and that is way more than I can handle for wiring so I have no idea. I can build a computer from scratch but cant wire a light. go figure.

@mesojdm tried that and reported not only did it not work but the driver’s side stopped working as well.

EDIT: yes thats how we now have it working, should have checked that myself instead of relying on second hand info.

Going to keep us waiting ehhh?
Thank you for keeping on this.
Please hit with handle part numbers when you can (before the rest of the write up if required), so can get these on order..

Consider the video a teaser, the part numbers as well as the write up will come tomorrow, no one is shipping Saturday night or Sunday anyway. I would post part numbers now but I’m at work and don’t have them with me.
