Never had the desire to retrofit HID or LED lights before, even in my old beater Civic. Never thought a brand new Tacoma would push me over the edge!

While the very sharp cut-offs provided by many newer headlights may be good for oncoming drivers, they often have the opposite effect on the driver of the vehicle. What happens is that the iris in your eyes closes up in response to the brightest portion of the beam making you less able to see any less well illuminated portions of the field--and pretty much anything in the non-illuminated "cut-off" area.

Headlights having a very bright near field also cause this issue as your eyes adjust to the bright near field, reducing distance vision.

As the IIHS article linked above indicated the projector headlights used on many/most modern vehicles suck--this is in no small part related to the sharp cut-off inherent in projector lamps.

This is likely irrelevant for urban and suburban drivers, however for those of us living in rural areas with no strip malls every 30 feet or even streetlights they really suck--and they really, really, really suck as you approach the bottom of rolling hills where you cannot even be sure there is a road ahead. When making sharp turns out here the cut-off at the sides is just as bad; last spring I hit a wild hog that I could not see while turning onto our road...
