I got my tool today, broke loose crankshaft pully bolt, and proceeded forward smoothly other than what a pain back tensioner bolt is with aircon still hooked up. But i did get it removed and reinstalled. At this stage im trying to get timing belt lined up and it does not want to go over crankshaft pully. I just watched a video that said to back off tensioner bolts in order to get the needed slack. Is this what i will need to do? TIA

You’re saying you have the new belt ready to go on right? It fits a little tight but yes loosen everything up as much as possible to get it on.

Im really struggling with this job. I backed off the tensioner enough to get belt on, it was still extremely tricky getting my marks lined up and staying, but i finally got it and everything seemed good. I tightened and torqued all my tensioners marks still good, i rocked the the engine, back and forth a little, fine. Pulled the pin the rocked the engine all the way through, when i get back to tdc, all my marks on belt have moved a tooth over, i roll it through again and it appears they are all 2 teeth over. What could be going on?!

It’s a 4 stroke cycle - it’s not going to line up every cycle. It’s in this video series if you need to see it by step

How many times would i need to rock it clockwise before my belt marks line up with my cam and crank marks? So this is normal?

Yes watch the video - its a 6 video series so skip to where he’s got the belt on. it’s a multiple of 4

Once you rotate it the initial line up marks on the belt will no longer line up. You need to be focused on the timing marks on the engine itself. The cam sprockets have lines milled into them that should line up with timing marks on the heads/inner timing cover. Crank sprocket has a dimple that lines up with timimg mark on the block.

No you don't...the tensioner ram is 2 bolts from the bottom without even taking the timing cover off....start with bolts about 4mm longer than the originals, bring them in a turn at a time...once you've got 5 or 6 turns on 'em, swap one for the original bolt, then another couple turns and swap the other one.

I want to say it’s 64 revolutions of the crank until it lines up again - I did it when I had done my timing belt but I didn’t want to give him false info.

I didn't have to do this, i backed them off a little at a time until there was enough slack in the belt. Then when i got everything lined up i when back down and tightened the back one again, checked marks tightened front tensioner bolt, rechecked, rocked it a little, pulled pin then rolled engine back to tdc a few times. My factory makes all stayed good but my belt markings all moved a notch each cycle. That got me panicked.

If you’ve flushed your coolant it will definitely be fine. I’ve used the “good for all makes” coolant in my 08 that uses the pink oem coolant instead of the 04 and earlier red oem coolant. Idk if it makes a difference between the two.

Most parts places sell Toyota / Lexus / Asian pre-04 red coolant which will match in color and work also.

I have not flushed, only drained, my bottom belt from rockauto is too short so i have to make a parts run, i will see if i can find a more compatible coolant while im out, again thanks for your help! I have to say im not sure i would take this job on again. very little went smoothly. Probably im out of practice. And feeling old.
