For 6 months in 2015 the Gen 3 was the background on my pc. When the time came to buy one in 2016 I took out a demo that the staff used. I was allowed to have it for the afternoon. I drove it all over the place for 3 hours. Great truck. I liked most of the upgrades. Off the bottom it took a few seconds to make power however at higher rpm, it was a rocket. There was a lot of shifting even going up silly slow slops and dead spots in the accelerator. I test drove a 2014 that was on the lot that day and got to feel the difference in power off the line. I ended up buying the 2013 Limited the next week. The new power train needed refining and the Gen 2 suited my needs better. Maybe in a few years they'll re tune the gen 3 to perform better at low rpm.

Can someone explain to me how the Infiniti Q50 (with the VQ (3.7)) makes 200 extra horsepower than my 3.6 in my "turd" gen?

Edit 1: I just realized the numbers I was looking at were for the I4 Tacoma vs VQ engine Nissaan/Infiniti uses

Congratulations on test driving and thoroughly evaluating your purchase. If only more people would do this.... ;)

I'm no "technical expert" but pretty sure it's due to the the Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor.

That only works good if you use high octane compost.

Did you drive it all day in D or explore S mode and ECT? Big difference in the feel and the transmission reflashes helped quite a bit in the later trucks.

When I was shopping I was looking at two 2015s the dealer had on the lot, drove them both quite a bit trying to decide which I wanted to take home, then he asked if I might be interested in the 2016 he had only it was a shortbed. Drove it, went home and did some cooling off, came back later in the week and drove the 15s and 16s he had back to back.

The 15s felt alot like my 04, only a bigger package. A little more power in a bigger truck but still seemed to peak at about 70-80 mph. It felt familiar but it didn't seem like I was getting a whole lot more other than some space from my 1st gen. The 16 felt like a completely different animal so I tired all the different modes, ECT, S-mode, highway driving, in the rain... hands down felt like a big leap in the way it handled and how it accelerated on the highway. I really liked it a lot but I didn't want to make a rash decision and be dazzled by the first new trucks on the road.

I knew the 15s were the proven technology, the 16 would be a gamble so I'd go home, cool off, look at other trucks, both 15's and 16s and drive them back to back trying to decide. To me the 16 just felt so much better so after three months, I pulled the trigger and ordered what I wanted. A 16 OR LB and have been happy with it ever since.

I really thought I was going to be in a 15, tried hard to tell myself that would be the better choice but it just didn't feel that way to me. Nothing really wrong with them, they just felt a bit long in the tooth compared to the 16.

    Just like the Frontier.

There might just be a 1 ft lb of torque difference between the two engines.....but the 1GR generates it's peak torque at a lower rpm than the 2GR.

Absolute peak numbers aren't always that important. It's where that peak torque is generated that's important.

In terms of bottom end.....the win goes to the 4.0

Thats why people are looking at the ovtune. The throttle response is better off the line in my wifes 2011 Highlander with a 3.5 litre. It has 270hp and 248 pounds of torque but off the line it feels stronger. Toyota could have tuned the Truck for better low end torque but probably due to fuel economy standards didn't do that. A better tune for low rpm power would make a lot of people here very happy.

    I have a 2017 Taco and a 2008 F350.

On the Tacoma the gas pedal accelerates the truck with a reasonable amount of power. On the F350, the gas pedal is linked directly to my bank account. The more you press it, the smaller your balance. I'm telling ya......these modern Toyota trucks are a blessing to some.
