If I followed my sticker I could only put 100 lbs in the bed with 4 adults in the cab. Why even bother putting a bed on it...

Are purposely obtuse or just dumb? The recall has nothing at all to do with the factory applied label on the truck that you’re concerned with. It was only about the little yellow sticker added when non-factory options are put on the truck. In this case the distributor identified errors in their system, was required to issue a recall by law and corrected it with revised software and new stickers sent to people. Completely unrelated to your concern about the factory payload rating by Toyota.

This must be a state by state thing, because here in Washington, just because one driver is doing something illegal doesn't mean it's always their fault. Case in point, my wife was making a left turn through two lanes of parked traffic on a busy street into the turn/suicide lane. A woman was in said lane passing all the parked traffic, well beyond the speed limit and the legal distance to be in the lane (there literally wasn't even a left turn for the driver for a quarter mile). Because my wife was entering the roadway, no matter what, it was her fault. The copy felt really bad, and gave as many tickets as they could to the other driver, but legally my wife was still at fault for the accident.

What I also hear constantly is that your insurance will refuse to pay if you are overloaded. But I've never seen any evidence of this. Negligence isn't a reason to deny insurance, and that even includes driving drunk and getting in a wreck. Insurance pays, and then kicks you off in all the stories I've read, online, and from people I have known who got DUIs and accidents. At least this is what I've seen in my research.

Cause yeah, you've seen me... I'm one of the idiots over payload (hopefully no more come spring). I've read and read, prolly 50-100+ hours easy and never found a story of Insurance not paying. Insurance always pays if it's an accident, only out seems to be if you do something ON PURPOSE, like a road rage thing where you "Maliciously" drive your car into another vehicle, or a building, or whatever out of anger or to otherwise purposefully cause damage. Not cause you were overloaded and had a blow out, or because you were staring at your cell phone when you ran your car into a ditch. You'll get in trouble with a ticket, etc, but never heard of insurance not paying (and again, they still kick you as soon as they pay out).

You're the one making pedantic strawmen, not me. I'm just playing along.

Alternatively, you could discuss the actual topic.

It's not state by state. It's not about if thru did something legal or illegal. It's like a priority list or order of events.

Somethings should preclude a vehicle from being on the road legally. Stuff like the driver not having a license, the vehicle not being registered, or a vehicle towing beyond its legal limits.

Whether or not insurance pays, the liability will fall on the vehicle that legally should not be on the road. I've not seen where insurance doesn't pay, but I wouldn't be surprised if they drop the offender after fighting to not pay.

The actual topic of payload in which you referenced an irrelevant recall? It’s pretty black and white, your payload rating is what Toyota stickers the truck at. If you want a more precise number go weigh your truck with a full tank of gas and subtract that from the GVWR found in the label next to the payload sticker. Or just load your truck with whatever you want, it really doesn’t matter as nothing changes the amount Toyota specifies as the legal payload.

I don’t think you know what that word means. All good though, keep ignoring the answer because you don’t like it. You won’t hurt anything loading 1600lbs in your truck even though the payload sticker says 1200. Plenty of people do it on a daily basis without even knowing such a sticker exists.

I posted the answer I received from Toyota.

The only thing being missed is the topic, by you.

p.s.: You really need to up your trolling game. That attempt was kind of pathetic.

Not trolling at all, just giving honest answers while sitting around drinking beer, doing yard work and wasting time on the internet today.

Ah. That explains why your "answers" are to questions no one asked.

The topic is about payload sticker discrepancies, not how much weight people load their truck with on a daily basis.

Tacoma Payload Shock Syndrome (TPSS) typically has 4 stages:

    1. Shock: WTF, mate!
    2. Denial: Clearly, this is a mistake..I'm going to peel off those door jamb stickers and keep a copy of the sales brochure in the glovebox instead.
    3. Anger: I'm going to sue everyone.
4: Acceptance: OK. This is fine. It's a lifestyle vehicle; a 4runner with a mullet.

Ahhhh, I will never forget the moment I realized our Outback had more payload capacity than my tough looking, near top spec pickup truck (had a '22 DCSB TRD-OR Premium at the time). It really hit home when I was going to run a pallet of stuff for work and the logistics manager wouldn't load it. "This weighs a tick under 1000#..I technically can't." Turns out he also owned a Tacoma and was intimately familiar with it's crossover-grade payload capacity. These are made for picking up your mountain biking bros, not lumber; 4G just has a little extra wiggle room for the onset of dad bod and/or eMTB.

Imagine buying a Ram 1500 and have less than 1000 pounds of payload. It isn’t uncommon for a fully loaded Ram.

o_O If you're not kidding, this does actually make me feel a LOT better. Makes me wonder how many "1500" model trucks can't actually 1500..

Well, I now feel compelled to get some "Heavy Duty" emblems for my 2G, which packs just shy of 1200# payload..
