I got a pretty good deal on it. Paid 20k. Its an 07 double cab 4x4 6spd with 44K miles. I was going to buy one at auction through a friend who is a dealer but that ended up falling through. I had been watching my truck on autotrader over the last six months. He kept coming down each month. At one point he was asking 24,900 for it. At the beginning of august he dropped the price to 20,900 and I called and offered 20k and he took it he was trying to get out of the payment. I didnt pay any sales tax since I bought it private party.

I guess we would get a fat severance check wouldn't we? Sweet, never really thought about it that way. Either way... I assume you are commissioned...

I did it again. Got tired of paying truck payments and gas and traded in for a 2015 Honda Accord Sport since I enjoyed my 2013 Sport so much.
$467/mo for 36mo at 7.5%. I didn't want to still be paying for it in 2025 or so.

Not too bad for first time buyer I guess.

I did pay $1500 down. Got another couple of years....will be paid off in 2011.

    Yay.

This is why I tend to stay out of taxes/finances discussions-Military lifestyle makes for odd perspectives on stuff like that. I haven't paid a dime of state income tax since I was in high school. I pay some state sales taxes...but I shop at commissaries and exchanges alot now...so I avoid alot of that too.

And I still save about 18% of my income (both thru TSP pre-tax and a Roth IRA for retirement and a money market account for mid-term savings)..so I can flex as needed for economic changes...PS- I like your other financial thread...

That I am...and Academy at that...So if they want to get rid of me before my service obligation...It's technically a "cancellation of contract" and there is a healthy (35-40K last I heard) severance payment...unless you do something to warrant the separation (NJP, Admin, etc).

And I'm about 6 months away from committing 8 additional years....I'd rather rely on the regular paycheck than the severance package...I love my job!!

The deductibles on my truck and the wife's SUV are each $1k. I'm on the hook for a little chunk of change if we ever wreck, but the total premium is about $80/month. It also helps that I insure both cars, my house and some personal property w/ one company.

Anybody who has low deductibles on their auto coverage is throwing money away.

I like the way you think, man.

We have a general emergency fund, and a seperate $1k as a car emergency/maint. fund. It was built up with insurance premium savings after the deductible was raised, and that's where the money comes from to cover the deductible if necessary. In the mean time, it's cash sitting around available to be used for new tires, timing belts, or other expensive and necessary repairs. (Sometimes I want to dip into it for mods, too... but I'm just too sensible!)

If you have 30k+ lying around:
Could you have it in an interest bearing account (like a CD) with a higher interest rate, get the purchase you are interested in financed for a period of time at a lower interest rate, and make a small profit off of it in the end?

Sure you could Ken doll, but you are talking two different lumps of money!

    1. The money in the CD is untouchable.
    2. Gotta have more to make the payment on whatever is financed.

But again! Why not pay cash!? Everyone loves forgetting about RISK! Look up the definition, it's a big factor in any like-given scenario.

I had half of the money I used in 2 CD's and the rest in savings. To me a few hundred bucks in interest a year isn't going to justify financing something I have the money for. Besides most rates aren't all that high right now most are going to end up being less than the interest rate you're going to be financing at. I play around with my stocks if I wanna try to make a few extra bucks from the little interest my savings/CD's are gonna give me. Save for taking advantage of 0% financing there's not going to be much benefit to just not paying cash and owning the vehicle from day one and not having to worry about it. Plus, it's nice knowing that if worse comes to worse and I find myself losing a job or something, I'm not going to lose my car because I can't make a payment and I could always sell it if things got that bad and not have to worry about owing X amount on it. It's mine.

All well and true, but not really related to my point at all...

It's not a turn off at all - it's all good advice he proposes. I just don't get why people act like he's some kind of genius.

I guess though with the recent financial troubles the country has and its continuing obsession with out-of-control credit card balances, sound financial knowledge is in shorter supply here.

Financing, like anything else, is situational. That's all I'm saying. Sometimes it's a good move, sometimes it isn't. The factors that affect which it is are innumerable and subject to the personal values of the person considering doing so.

FWIW, my only debt is my Taco, and I only financed it because the interest rate on the loan is lower than the annual rate of return of the investment fund I would've cashed in to buy it. Technically, I'm making money by making payments on it.

Maybe I was unclear - that's not my argument. I'm just saying sometimes, in fact often, financing can work in someone's favor. You just have to know what it is and how it works.

    Yeah, I'd agree there.

It's called a carry, and yes. As another poster pointed out, though, there is the liquidity issue.

As for the OP's question, I had an OTD of $27.9k and a 3.9% over 60 mos. =PMT in excel gets me $513.

My payment is about 420 a month, (60 months), but it would have been 399 had I not got the extended warranty/extra care. I still pay 500 a month though. 3.9% with 6500 down on trade-in, 21k financed.
