PCS Error after Mods

    To whom it may concern;

For anyone who may know what to do:

I recently completed my build on my 2023 Tacoma and I am having an issue with the sonar system.

Toyota is claiming my PCS says I’ve lifted the truck beyond what can be reprogrammed.

Stock height from the ground to the center of the Toyota badge in the grill is 2.8 feet. Supposedly, it can be altered to 3.1 feet without issue and can be recalibrated within that range. However, I’ve supposedly lifted my front end to 3.4 feet.

I don’t see how this is possible. My Bilstein (5100) shocks reuse the stock springs and the tires (Radar Renegade 245/75/17) are not that much bigger than stock. My items simply cannot account for 6.5” of lift..?. Can they??

Has anyone encountered this issue before? Does anyone know of a way to jailbreak the system or bypass the limitations? Or do I need to rebuild and lower my front end?

Yeah that doesn't make any sense to me. I've got 35s on my truck with no issues.

Maybe something has changed with the lift to affect the ride angles, like having less rake now? Seems like it should be an easy calibration fix.

The truck is level now, maybe even a hair higher in the front than the rear…

Does it need to be a dealer to recalibrate?

Unless they changed something on the 2023, the dealership (Toyota) recommends disabling the PCS system.
Understand that by doing so, it will permanently turn it off.
The only way to turn it back on is with a new ECM/Module.

The reason there is no "recalibration", is because there is no way "one way" to recalibrate the system.
Not all lifts are the same, there would need to be multiple different calibrations for each lift.
And trial and error is about the only real way to know what one works.

That said, I've read where some guys have messed around with the Active Radar and positioned it to where it "fixed" the issue.
But again, I read it on the internet. So that doesn't mean much. Plus, it's a trial and error process.

No any glass place like safelight should have the tools to recalibrate those sensors. They have to be calibrated after replacing the windshield.

Have you tried disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes to see if the truck will reset itself?

You may want to disconnect any aftermarket wiring too so we can eliminate that as a potential source for a problem. The wiring in these trucks is notoriously sensitive.

Also probably a good idea to check all your fuses and relays.

That will not fix the issue.

    The issue is the lift.

This has been an ongoing issue since the release of the 3rd Gen trucks.
As stated, Toyotas fix is to disable the PCS. The owners signs a wavier of liability, the dealership deletes the PCS and issue solved.

How does one go about “lowering” the sonar relay behind the badge on the grill?

Can you describe what other mods were done with your lighting? Cheap LED taillights are known to throw PCS errors occasionally. Did you get the lift and lighting at the same time?

I'm not convinced this is definitely an issue with the lift and tires just yet.

I have a 20” light bar up front and two 3” square pods in the back - both bypass the fuses and computer and are wired directly to the battery

Rumor has it, you can use some washer to angle the sensor down.
How many washer, and how much it needs to be tilted are anyone's guess.

Just a nit picky add on; PCS and adaptive cruise control use both the windshield sensor and grille sensor. Also worth noting is that safelight as a company refuses to calibrate after windshield replacement, if the vehicle has larger than stock tire size or they determine it is lifted. Read this on the forum and then experienced it irl
If you have the oval “T” badge in the middle of the grille you could get the pro/heritage grill because its sensor is mounted at the bottom under the letters “TOYOTA”
Your subtle Carolina squat is why the sensor is throwing errors. Start pointing the nose up and angles go out the window. That’s my guess anyway, but I’m wildly prejudiced against leveling kits and squatters so take my opinion with a grain of salt :boink:

Hey man, I'm trying to help. Even expensive LED taillights sometimes require additional resistors.

I found out this the hard way. Dealer disabled mine permanently and like you mentioned, loss of cruise control. Sucks not having it on long trips. Also one other honorable mention - you'll have a amber indicator light permanently turned on in the dash as well, constantly reminding you that the PCS system is turned off. Drawbacks people need to be aware of...

You can’t even use manual cruise (hold the button, different symbol pops up)? I would NOT be a fan of that at all…

If you go that route know that the OEM sensor garnish is wildly expensive and the aftermarket ones can be hit or miss, sometimes throwing PCS errors. No guarantee it will solve anything if your issue is angles, but you’ll look cool! And also gain spots for raptor lights :burp:
