Attempted to hit Peacock flats this past weekend...in the rain. 2013 Double Cab TRD OR 4X4 completely stock with Rugged Trails 30K miles on the truck / tires.

    -Only tried the main road.
-Stuck going uphill. Tires clogged with mud no traction sliding backwards even with breaks on. Couldn't clear the mud by spinning the tires.
-4 Lo; Locked - Still no traction
-Took 2hrs to turn around (sliding back into same grooves, almost into the side of the road)
-Couldn't even walk on the stuff.

I'm trying to figure out why I got stuck. Can you guys make it in the rain / slick clay soil? If so what type of tires do you run for those slippery clay conditions or will no tire make it? I was looking at BFG KO2 AT tires. Any experience running these at Peacock flats?

At least when we got out Yokohama / Kaena Pt. was nice...

Mud terrain tires will help in the mud.

Thanks! Have you run mud terrains in that clay type soil and made it ok?

Trying to shy away from M/T tires as this is a daily driver...but if that's the only way it'll work I get it.

Even with MT tires you slide all over the place. I can just imagine how stock tires must feel up there. Maybe you can try an in between tire. Duratracs? I think toyo makes an "in between" tire.

What have you done to your truck lately
Yes KM2's help, did you air down? The stock tires are rated as rugged fails, I wouldn't go off roading up there with those tires especially if it's raining. Did you go alone? It's good to go in a group so you will have help to tow or pull you out of the rut.:anonymous:

My Dyna Pro MT's made it almost all the way without getting stuck in wet conditions. 2wd just couldn't make it around the 3rd to the last turn lol

Tires are where your truck meets the dirt, one of the most important things you can spend money on besides the truck.

The Dyna Pro's aren't quite as aggressive as KM2's so they are quieter, but Duratracs are even quieter. I have KO's a few years ago and they were good but they sucked in mud. I keep going more aggressive each time and never looked back, forward is the only direction :)

Good info re: the tires. I did air down to 15 psi...didn't want to go lower without bead locks, didn't help at all.

I shouldn't have gone in conditions like that but gotta try um if you paid for the permit right

Better tires will help tremendously. The Rugged Trails suck ass in almost everything. Good mud tires would be your best bet, but if it's a daily driver I recommend the Cooper ST Maxx, the Toyo R/T, and Goodyear Duratracs if you're going to be in the mud. I have heard good things about the BFG KO2, but don't know how it does in the mud.

I've been looking at this site: http://www.offroaders.com/tech/AT-MT-Tires/MT-Mud_Terrains.htm

I just wish I could find something that's:
    -Good on road (quiet)
-Good in rain (on / off road)
    -Good on sand
    -Good in mud
-And doesn't affect fuel mileage (yeah right).

Anyone know where this unicorn exists, haha.

    Considering:
    - Goodyear® Wrangler Kevlar MT/R Mud Terrain Tire
-Toyo Open Country MT - Lex Brodies ?
-Toyo Open Country AT - Lex Brodies ?
-Cooper Discoverer ST/C - Need to ship?
-Cooper Discoverer All Terrain - Need to ship?
    -KO2 - Believe Costco sells for ~180.

My main concern is that I work in a "professional" environment and don't want to roll in with too hard-core of a look...not that anyone would really notice. :anonymous: Can't even get a lift or I'll hit the roof of the parking garage :(

    Thanks again for the help!

My toyo at2's pretty much covers all of that but im a prerunner so can really say how good they actually are in mud or sand.

KO2's and any other AT work just fine up there as long as you keep in mind it's not a mud tire. If you mostly drive on the road they are a good option. They also get great mileage. My dad was getting 70,000 on average out of 3 sets of the old version.

Thanks! Didn't mean to turn this into another tire thread, I apologize.

I had a 2.7 5spd access cab and pre-runner TRD OR too...went 4x4 after getting stuck couple times in the sand around pray for sets and couldn't comprehend a TRD Off-Road that kept getting stuck.

Thought with a 4x4 I wouldn't have the same problem...oh well at least I now know that with a 4x4 I can get further down the trail BEFORE getting stuck, haha.
