My extension here (Bethesda - USUHS) has been denied and I must return to general population. Due to the low numbers of E7s in my career field I'll be headed back to a real base. I'm kind of excited and nervous b/c they haven't told me where yet. Barksdale is on the list and a 'little birdie' told me that Macdill and Offutt might be open. Luke, Sheppard (NO THANKS!) and Randolph might be as well. Also, my previous base will have a MSgt opening come May time-frame. Not sure what to do here. Thoughts?

I'm guaranteed to stay out of "Big Blue" another 3 yrs... maybe 7 if I can swing a 1 for 1 swap with another location. Luke and Macdill seem to be the one's that jump out to me, then again it's all personal preference. Good Luck.

I'm not sure what you do but if you have anything to do with aircraft maintenance, Barksdale is a complete nightmare. I've been here 4 years and couldn't tell you how many exericses and 12 hr shifts that have happened during this time with tdy's during most of these exercises and the usual vacation to Guam (the best/only awesome part about it). The local area here isn't too bad and bigger cities aren't too far of a drive away which can make for nice weekend getaways. I honestly do enjoy living here and experiencing the local culture. Oh, and there are plenty of things to do if you enjoy the outdoors both on/off base. I will say that from my perspective on the flightline, we always have more people leaving than coming in. Outside of this, I don't have a clue what its like.

I could make do with almost anywhere as long as the work environment is good and I have my wife and kids. Of course there are locations that seem more appealing than others but the other factors should rank higher. Tampa is on the list which is great location but I hear the work environment might not be the greatest. Shreveport would be a good geographic location to be close to family but then you deal with the PRP headache. When it comes down to it we go where they send us and suck it up, but before then we still try to influence the process a bit.

Ft Indiantown Gap is fun. Depending on what your job is, you work your butt off but you have a good time and it is rewarding. I won't make it this year b/c they changed the date fro Jun to Oct but I am going to try to come back as an augmentee if my gaining base will let me.

Man what do you all do? I haven't figured out how to get the special duty assignments.

If I ever make MSgt I hope to be a functional. I always wanted to know how they pick out assignments.

I vote Macdill. Gorgeous area but expensive. I'm sure BAH makes up for it though. Also, Nellis is opening up a new VA hospital. I'm sure your services could be utilitzed there as well.

I was non-vol'd here after being told that my BOP was denied due manning at my current base and no one would be moving. I'm not sure WTF AFPC does/thinks most of the time. AFPC = Another F#*king, Please Comply
I'd like to work there, must be easy to make no thought decisions and use canned statements to justify your actions.

I didn't go to Andrews for anything unless I had to; to far of a drive, about 40 miles or so. (I work at NNMC and live in Germantown). I did FIG 2010 and 2011, not sure if you were there then or not. When I was up there, my Tacoma was also.
I noticed that you are at Tinker on E-3s. We are looking into Tinker to see if there are any openings. My wife was stationed there when she was in back in 97-01 and still has job contacts. My dad was a mx officer on the E-3s way back in the day (70s-80s). Not a bad area from what I remember. Wasn't into wheeling back then and didn't look into camping and fishing either.

No openings there. Those bases fill quickly. I'd go for it if it were open.

OP - what's your career field? I was a 3C (now 3D) so the options were always wide open for me. Overseas is always a blast.

Adam Baum - In the assignments website there is (was) a link for special duty assignments. That's how I got NATO at Ramstein - best tour ever.

I worked AWACS at Tinker in the late 80's. The base and town blew chunks back then. I put in for overseas just to get the heck outta there.

I'm a 4C0, "The Mental Health Guy" as I've been called on deployments/fieldex's. There have many times in my career that I thought I was in the wrong field. I think I need to be working with my hands. I don't fit the normal MH mold.

You are correct about the AMS site. There is a link for special duties called Equals Plus (and Equals Overseas and Equals Overseas/Mandatory Movers, all located together) not sure about the update schedule of the Equals Plus.

My dad did AWACS back when they were AWACSS (I remember when they dropped the second 'S') and the crossed to F-4s.
