I spotted this one in Nashville Tennessee!

 

September 7th, 2019:

Springtown, Pennsylvania

 

1991 S-10 regular cab short bed 2WD; Originally a 2.5L/5-speed with factory A/C, the current owner swapped in a 4.3L V6/automatic (he kept the A/C, luckily) and heavily customized it; Not a big fan of wire wheels or the fact the bed has been rendered completely useless, but it is a cool truck nonetheless! The owner had it painted, and added one hell of a stereo system; He also added a backup camera! The paintwork on the hood of this truck was a bit too hot for TW, so I had to censor it in order comply with the CoC...


August 17th, 2013:

Warminster, Pennsylvania

 

Same S-10 at a different show almost three years later, sporting some much nicer wheels (The black 1993 extra-cab S-10 can be seen next to it)!

Harry Dalton's 1987 Chevrolet Suburban K1500 Silverado, which despite bearing United States Geological Survey insignia on the front door, I believe to be his personal vehicle...



The movie was made in 1996 and took place in 1997, by which time this Burb would have been a decade old; I do not think the US government was using vehicles that old for civilian agencies.

Also, a government vehicle not destined for use on a battlefield or way out in the wilderness would not have the following upgrades that this Suburban clearly has...

• A snorkel (which actually sees use in the movie)
• A lift kit
• A winch
  
• A grille guard with off-road lights
• A roof basket with even more off-road lights

Harry's Suburban is also a fully loaded Silverado model with front and rear A/C (the rear A/C vents can clearly be seen in some scenes) and power everything; I am 99% sure that this vehicle was intended to be the character's personal daily driver and not owned by the USGS.

 

The insignia on the door appears to be a magnet that can be removed when Harry is not working; Here, Harry and Rachel are rushing to get in the truck after the volcano erupts...

Actually, I take back just about everything I said; It would appear that Harry's Suburban has a U.S. Government license plate...



My cousin is a park ranger, and considering that one of the government vehicles he drove in 2018-2019 was a shitty 15-year old Tahoe, it actually does not seem unlikely for the USGS to have a 10-year old Suburban in 1996-1997!

You can't see it in these stills, but a few other people see the properly-equipped Suburban driving into the water and try to follow; In one scene, a 1986ish Oldsmobile Cutlass floats into the side of the Suburban and smashes the front passenger window.

 

This is not snow...

It is ash from the volcano!

 

The kids borrow mom's FJ60 to drive up the mountain in attempt to make their stubborn grandma, Ruth, come with them; Ruth had previous refused to leave her mountain cabin...

Here, we see Ruth's 1980 AMC Eagle, Harry's 1987 Chevy Suburban, and Rachel's 1984 Toyota Land Cruiser, all getting melted by the lava

All three vehicles were parked outside of Ruth's cabin, which was also completely destroyed by the lava.

Apparently, at least one of the four Suburbans used in the movie was a 1985...

 

And here is another 1980s square body used in a "Hero" role in Dante's Peak; It is a 1985 Chevrolet K30 crew cab with a utility body, portrayed as a park ranger's truck...

In this still shot, the truck has already been driven through lava. The tires have been destroyed and scorch marks can be seen on the body; However, at this point the truck could probably still be repaired...

Sadly, it ends up getting totaled when an abandoned mine collapses on it at the end of the movie

Harry, Rachel, and the kids find the truck to be unlocked but without any keys; Harry is forced to hotwire it as seen below...

Unlike Harry's fully loaded Suburban, which has the Silverado trim, air-conditioning, and power everything, this old beast has the basic Custom Deluxe trim, no A/C, and vinyl seats; Still a sweet truck though!
