Speaking of stats , any recommendations for a wifi stat? Something we can see on our phones and set schedules.... do I really need one? We have a programmable one and serves us well... if we get cold we walk over to turn up a degree..

 

Why does a 1.5-ton Carrier heat pump have a larger outdoor coil than my 2-ton and 2.5-ton straight-cool units?

 

Heat pump a higher SEER? More efficient unit has more coil to make more air to air exchange.

 

Honeywell is probably my favorite due to price and overall quality. Nest would be last, everything else in between.

Everything you need, nothing you don't.

Being able to adjust the thermostat while laying on your ass on the couch can not be overstated. Checking while out and about is nice, but not having to move from a comfortable spot is amazing lol.

Also, the ability to have it notify you in the event of a heating or cooling failure is great.

 

I have one gripe with ecobee and it has to do with the fact it can't notify you if it loses communication with the router, but otherwise they are pretty nice.

I still prefer Honeywell, but the 'bee is nice too.

1984 Carrier heat pump at the same building…

 

I believe that both of my Goodmans are 14 SEER (possibly 13 SEER), but I have no idea what SEER the Carrier heat pump is...

The link below is for a Bryant, but the first four digits of the model number are the same, so that would this unit in the range of 14 to 15 SEER. It's probably the cheapest Carrier residential heat pump available, but at least it has a TXV and a scroll compressor!

I obtained all three of these for free, and I have decided to send all three to appliance heaven. The Midea (top) actually works (as in it turns on and blows cold air; I tested it on an unseasonably warm November day), and I was going to clean it up and sell it. However, it is nasty inside and I need the money now, so I decided to scrap it. I literally found the Midea curbside in front of somebody’s house last month, while the other two (GE and Haier) came from a woman who was giving them away on Facebook marketplace. The GE and the Haier both turn on and blow air, but it was too cold for the compressors to engage and both units were rather grungy…

The 5k BTU Midea was easily one of the grungiest window A/Cs that I’ve ever torn apart!

 

The GE was cleaner…

 

The Haier was old enough that it used R-22, so I’m guessing it was early 2000s…

Yesterday, we made a delivery to this brand new house, and it had a central A/C setup I’ve never seen in person…

 

There was the main house, pictured above, and there was a guest house. The guest house had its single central A/C unit right next to it, but the two units for the main house were installed at the bottom of the hill and presumably had the lineset running underground…
