Ya it was a weird time. My mom remembers regretting the mustang and calling my dad an idiot for buying it when it broke down.

The mazda was a welcome car in our house lol.

Ethanol sucks! Sometimes I cringe when I see "10% ethanol content" and have no choice but to pump it into my truck...

Penn Silver Taco must love them Mazda's. I have a soft spot for them too. I wish they still made cars like that. Toyota , Nissan, Honda all built great cars and trucks back then while America was building crap and they paid for that.
My new 93 Ranger Splash sat for 2 years because I preferred driving the Mazda. I traded it in with 1800 miles for a 96 Grand Prix coupe for my wife. It was a total waste of money but my wife thought the Mazda was looking to rusty. I continued driving it until 2002 if I remember right. It was way past rusty by then. Loved that truck.

I have a soft spot for all 1980s Japanese vehicles! Actually, it's more like this...

I went Japanese for the first time with that little Mazda pick up. Bought several American cars but the ones that I held onto were Japanese.
I just caught myself in a lie. The car I have owned the longest is my 1965 Ford Galaxie 500. I bought that one in 1989 and still have it. 31 years.
I hold on to it because it reminds me of when cars were really cars. The front seat is like a couch and it floats over bumps and potholes, When you punch it it comes to life and just doesn't pretend to. The best part is seeing people take a long look when you drive by. Most cars today they don't even notice. The simplicity of it is so nice. I've pulled engines, swapped trannys and rear ends. I usually won't touch anything made in the last 20 years.
The Mazda's back then are a time piece as well.

Many moons ago ... my first two cars in Colorado, which were great for twisty mountain roads.

The "silver hornet" was a 1980 GS. It had one of those cheap paint jobs on it when I bought it and had been abused. Five years later the once shinny paint became primer gray. At about 170k miles, the car had a bad vapor lock issue that ended its days.

I next bought a 1984 GLS-SE. Wow, it was an improvement with everything. It was a fun car and chicks dug it. It's now sitting in a friend's garage waiting to be restored.
