    Little bit of stuff.
Last year I had a guy at a gas station genuinely ask me if my truck was a 2018 model. I just took it as a compliment on how clean she was, but still. He knew she was a Taco, but not that she was 12 years old. But even more relevant, yes I hate when people don't know a thing about their vehicle. I'm a parts guy, and I'm always getting hit with the double whammy of the customer for one not having their VIN, and two not knowing a thing about their car. But yet they fully expect me to be able to find the correct part for their vehicle. Fun times.

What gets me is people spend a bunch of money buying their vehicles but they don’t know a damn thing about them.

There was this guy who used to play at Puck all the time, and at the time he was driving a 2012 or 2013 VW Passat. This car had a personalized license plate that said “DIRT LAW”. I saw the plate and asked him if he was a real estate lawyer.

He said he was in fact a real estate lawyer and that I was the first person to get the meaning of his license plate. Most people though he represented people in the porn industry, and scumbags in general!

I have a hard time beliebing there were no clips at a dealership.

Did the parts guy try to chat you up or act like he may have had something in his eye?

I actually had to google "Jesus clips" to find out what the hell you were talking about.
Won't do me no good looking up part numbers though.
    I have power windows.
I ordered a throttle body gasket from the local dealer on Tuesday.
You would think that a part worth less than $8.00 would be in stock?
    Nope.
The dipshit parts counter guy informs me that the part has to be ordered and I should call next Tuesday to see if it's in.
This dealership has many employees and their names are on the salesorders.
Next time I go in I'm going to ask for the parts guy that gave me a discount and got the parts from Toronto the next day.
I have a theory that they actually have a lot of parts in stock like nuts, bolts, gaskets, etc but the parts are reserved for the service department to service loyal customers and not for the do-it-yourself backyard mechanics working on 10+ year old trucks that might need a new frame.

I just read all the comments and practically every point was made already. You should own two vehicles so you have a spare even tho you can get a free loaner while the main is in the shop. The reason being you might want to be able to lend one to a friend. You obviously would love to go offroading in a 5 speed 4x4 but perhaps it would be better if that was a weekend hobby and not also your daily driver... another reason to own two. You can keep highway tires on one and knobby tires on the other. One can ride low and the other can get a lift.
Well this one is one that got away but you can go ahead and start a savings account just for the next one and get prequalified for financing. You might aught to set your goal on getting a new one.
While they do hold value and it can seem like an investment, I would never advise anyone to buy a vehicle for that reason. Basically if you're not gaining value from it while you own it then it's a liability. The entertainment and utility value of owning a 4x4 for the weekend and as a backup is worth the cost in my humble opinion, but an overriding factor is whether you can afford it. Not everyone can get an income equivalent to their ability to work... that's called being underemployed and no one can force someone to hire them so we are all underemployed to some extent. If you put the same amount of money as payments into a savings account for a year then you'll have a 20% down payment. Of course you probably already know this but I'm sure someone else might read this and be glad for the tip. If you can't save at that rate then you would definitely be in trouble trying to make payments. If you have poor credit, the interest on financing can double the cost. Yet many people finance rather than save so they can have it now rather than 5 years later. There are creative alternatives that will let you own sooner. For example, a new vehicle will qualify for an advertising wrap. You could co-own it with friends. I've rambled enough for now.

That regular cab 4x4 would have sold in a couple days.

No offense, because I know how much you like your 5 lug, but a 5 lug auto 2wd is not a rare or desirable truck.

A regular cab 4x4 5 speed is a rare and incredibly desirable truck. They aren't even in the same league as far as capability.

I would have snapped up the 4x4. Don't get emotionally attached to depreciating assets.

Many of us Reg cab owners have never owned anything but Reg cab short beds. I know this isnt considered a short bed any more but used to be . I must of had 2 dozen since I started driving in the early 70s only 3 Toyotas mostly full size trucks all 4x4s . This 08 with 111,000 mile SR5 bucket seats will probably stay here for the rest of my life unless the offer ya can't refuse ever comes along

I have a friend who lives in Hong Kong, and he says that airbag deployment will automatically result in the vehicle being written off, even if it is brand new and/or only moderately damaged. This is not only true in Hong Kong, but also in other parts of Asia and pretty much all of Europe.

If the airbags deploy and the cost of repairing the vehicle is determined to be more than the actual cash value, then the fate of vehicle should be determined by the owner. People often do buy back their totaled vehicles, repair them, and get a rebuilt/salvage title. I see absolutely no problem with this as long someone doesn't try to pass off the vehicle as having never been wrecked when selling it.

If the airbags deploy and the damage to the vehicle is repairable, then by all means repair it. My mom's 2013 Nissan Murano was involved in an accident with airbag deployment before we bought it (my parents did not know this at the time, otherwise they never would have bought it).

I honestly think that totaling a vehicle just because the airbag deployed is a waste of what could otherwise be a perfectly good vehicle.

    Absolute myth.

Cost to repairs is weighed against the value of the vehicle and policy.

Roofs used to buckle and they would write it off, this is no longer the case.

Frames would bend, they would write it off, no longer the case.

Hell we see phentonal and rats nests and they won't write off vehicles.

In HK, airbag deployment is an automatic writeoff, which I think sucks.

Say I were to hit a deer in my Tacoma, resulting in no frame damage, moderate front end damage, and a deployed airbag. I'd want my truck repaired!

Myth here state side. Deer hit prior to my steel bumper deployed airbag, then I hit a tree. 14k of plastic and sheet metal replaced with about 2k being a/b deployment cost iirc.

Hence why cost of living in HK is one of if not the highest in the world. The citizens are the ones that pays for dumb policies at the end of the day.
