We are almost two decades in to the 21st century! LEOs can tell if someone has a suspended or revoked license by simply running their name and/or license number through a computer database.

As someone on the autism spectrum, I am particularly impressed with what Maryland has done; Maryland requires that anybody with any form of autism who applies for a driver's license (and presumably a state ID) checks a box on the application form stating that they have autism. There is no Aspergers, no PDD-NOS, just autism. I forget when I first read about this, but it was after I got my PA license, and I'm guessing it was sometime in 2012 or 2013. I was going through my phase of visiting the DMV websites of random states and seeing how strict the rules were regarding the transfer of a valid out-of-state driver's license, so that is how I found out about this requirement in Maryland.

I was against this at first, because I thought it violated my privacy and that it was absolutely none of the government's business whether or not I had autism (Even though I'm very open about the fact that I have Aspergers, and it's a moot point anyway because I've never lived in Maryland). Now, after two traffic stops in less than two years that probably would have gone better if the cop knew I had autism, I think it's genius!

What does Pennsylvania confiscating a license for months, or even years, possibly accomplish?!?!

Some states, like my current home state of Pennsylvania, are pretty lax about transferring a valid out-of-state license. All you really have to do is prove you're in the country legally, prove that you're a resident of Pennsylvania, and take a vision test. If your out-of-state license is expired six months or less, you can get away with not having to take any tests as well. For people with physical disabilities, a road/skills test may be required. Once your license is expired more than six months, you have to start from scratch; Take the knowledge test, get a learner's permit, take the road test, and get a license. I have a feeling that DMV employees have made exceptions to this rule for certain situations, like a veteran with an expired license who's been deployed for months.

No U.S. state will require an able-bodied and healthy person with a valid out-of-state license to take a road/skills test, but a good number of them require a knowledge test regardless of your previous driving record. These states include California, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Oregon, North Carolina, and Utah. Most states seem to pay little attention to your driving record from other states as long your license is valid, even if you've previously gotten a DUI in the past. Nevada, however, requires new residents with valid licenses to take a knowledge test if they've gotten a DUI in another state in the last 7 or 10 years. Many states are quirky in their requirements for out-of-state license transfers, and even for residents; For example:

Oklahoma is as lenient as Pennsylvania when it comes to renewing a valid out-of-state license, but the DMV website states that anyone with a license expired even one day will have to take a driving test.

Wisconsin will supposedly transfer an out-of-state license expired as much as eight years, as long as it is not suspended or revoked.

Michigan will let you transfer a valid out-of-state license expired up to four years.

West Virginia requires all applicants to take a brief "alcohol awareness course" in order to get a license, even if they are over 21.

Rhode Island requires all new residents to transfer their license at an inefficient central facility in Providence. First licenses for new Rhode Island residents are only good for two years, but each subsequent license will be good for 4-5 years, and established residents can renew at any DMV location.

North Carolina requires proof of insurance in order to renew a license, in addition to requiring a "road sign recognition test" at each renewal for established residents. If an NC resident does not have a car and thus does not require insurance, but has a valid license and drives a company vehicle for work, they must apply for a "fleet license".

This part is only in my Aspergers thread...

I agree wholeheartedly with Maryland's policy on autistic motorists. There is nothing on the physical license saying that the licensee has autism. It only shows up in the computer when a cop runs the license.

However, a couple of people I know have been forced to get "restricted" licenses after getting 2 or more DUIs in certain period of time. I have no problem with it showing up on a computer, but it seems like DUI laws in many states are aimed at publicly shaming the offender more than anything. If someone with a Pennsylvania license is over 21, and their BAC is below a certain amount, then their license does not get suspended for their first DUI. Two DUIs in a certain amount of time, and your license is suspended for six months, and you have to get one of those ignition interlock devices. Three DUIs in a certain amount of time, and your license is revoked, which means you to wait several years to apply for a new license and then take all the tests again, and then once you get a license, you have to use an ignition interlock for a year.

    /\/\/\/\
I agree with all of the above!

What I do not agree with is that the license actually says "RESTRICTED LICENSE" on it in red letters along with "Ignition Interlock" in a red box. This means that when you're buying an age restricted item, trying to board an airplane, or, god forbid, attempting to buy alcohol or get into an establishment where alcohol is served, the person checking your ID will know you have been convicted of drunk driving.

I take that sort of thing on a case-by-case basis. The guy who hit my Tacoma in 2015 killed somebody while driving drunk in the late 1980s and did time for it. Recidivists like him should have to carry a "restricted" license for the rest of their lives, or better yet not have a license at all. People like my friend who made one dumb decision to drive home after smoking weed and got busted, but didn't hurt anybody, shouldn't have to deal with the embarrassment.

I remember one time when I was still in college (I believe this was before I got a license myself), I was in line in the cafeteria waiting to pay for my lunch. The guy in front of me (I was 21 or 22 at the time, and he was roughly my age if not younger) took out his wallet so he could pay, and I saw the scarlet brand of a restricted license. I had no idea what this was, but I correctly assumed he must have gotten a DUI and didn't embarrass the poor bastard by asking about it.

Another example would be "Sex Offender" driver's licenses...

Let's get one thing straight here; I think that pedophiles and other sexual predators should be kept in prison for the rest their natural lives, and in some cases get the death penalty. If they do somehow get out, which has happened, then they should be castrated and monitored for the rest of their lives.

I remembered an article I read years ago about a gay guy from Louisiana who ended up on the sex offender registry as a result of vindictive boyfriend more than anything else. There are two sides to every story, and though I obviously do not know this guy personally, I do not think he meant any harm. Needless to say, he must now carry around a driver's license that says "SEX OFFENDER" below his picture in big red letters.

Again, I think child molesters and just about any kind of sexual predator deserves to die, but this guy does not fall into either of those categories in my opinion. I would also like to point out that in some states, it is possible to end up on the sex offender registry for soliciting a prostitute...

I have never attempted to pick up a hooker, and have no desire to do so, but that's bullshit right there. If the prostitute is a minor, then that qualifies as statutory rape and/or child sexual abuse, and the person should have to register as a sex offender if and when they are proven guilty and convicted. In cases of an adult paying another adult for consensual sex, it is definitely a crime (though not in all jurisdictions), but not a so-called "sex offense" in my book. I think catching an STD would be punishment enough.

I will be personally disappointed with anything less than 300k miles out of my 2.7 and I'm hard on it. Bought with 130k, 208k now only 4 years later. Failures during that time were radiator cap and 1 U joint, total about $45. I've changed other things including carrier bearing. I drive it every single day then air down and wheel it on the weekends. Doesn't use any engine oil. I just changed the transmission and T case oil and they came out looking great.

So yesterday I made a Doordash pickup at a place called Jules Thin Crust, and a 2-year old boy immediately who was leaving with his mom immediately expressed interest in my truck. My 10-year old truck with almost 105K miles!

We chatted for a bit (me and the mother) and I told the kid he had good taste in trucks.

I have driven only one Saturn in my life, and I’m proud to say it was a stick shift!

The Saturn I drove was a 2002 SL sedan with over 200K miles, belonging to the same colleague to
whom my dad sold our 2004 Honda Odyssey. Despite having high miles, the red ‘02 Saturn had ice cold A/C, ran and drove great, and was later sold for $800. I could kick myself for not buying that car!

I saw this sportier SC in Doylestown the other day, and was pleased to see that it was also equipped with a 5-speed millennial anti-theft device! It also happened to be in halfway decent condition!

Unfortunately, our nanny state government won't allow them to be driven on public roads here unless they're old 25 years or older...
