    Back in 2000-2001, when we were living in Washington state, my friend's adoptive father had a brown 1985ish Toyota 2WD pickup that he absolutely loved. He gave it to his daughter, who parked it somewhere she was not supposed to. The Revenue Generation Officers we call police impounded the truck and daughter dearest couldn't afford to get it back. By the time daddy found out, it had already gone to auction. Daddy ended up buying a silver no-frills 1997 Mercury Tracer 4-door sedan. That car had A/C and a tape player; no other options. It didn't even have tilt steering! The brown Toyota was a stick shift, but I can't remember if the Merc was a 5-speed or a slushbox. He hated that car, but it proved to be reliable transportation.

    It's not really odd when you remember that the 3.9 is just an old fashioned LA engine with 2 cyls chopped off. Chrysler was in another no money state when that POS V6 was developed, it was an unbalanced junker that made people think it was misfiring because it was so unbalanced... also was gutless. But ther exhaust manifold layout is like an old V8 because it basically is just with the front portion chopped off, and the two grouped cyls are in the front (would've been center on the LA V8 it was "engineered" out of)

    Oh come on, I'm sure you know them... perpetually broke Detroit based auto manufacturer. Make bottom dollar garbage no one actually wants, occasionally have a winner or two that keeps them afloat... Sometimes sells Japanese cars under their name licensed from Mitsubishi (the Chrysler of Japan).... ringing any bells?

    I'm pretty sure this was post AMC acquisition Iacocca years

    The 3.9L wasn't bad...? At least not the older variants...

    The 1992-1993 variation made 180hp, which was impressive for the time. My uncle's 1993 Sport had the 3.9L V6, 5-speed stick, and a 3.42 posi; Quite a quick truck!

    Right, I mentioned the odd looking exhaust manifold, and he pointed out why it looked that way.

    @Speedytech7

    Is it just me, or did Mitsubishi sell its motors to damn near everyone back in the day? My dad had a 1990 Mazda B2600i 4x4 from 1998 to 2000. It was reliable, but at less than 100K miles that truck steadily leaked oil. By comparison, my Tacoma is now a year older than that Mazda was when the oil leak manifested itself, and it has probably 8,000 more miles! My Tacoma leaks absolutely no oil and runs silent as a church mouse at almost 106K!
