Most of the house was decades-old faux-wood paneling, but after looking at these pictures I remember the kitchen having recently been redone; That's a 22-year old me in the kitchen helping prep for a crab boil...

My mom's side of the family had reunions in Sandbridge in 2008, 2011, and 2013. In 2009, my cousin got married in Hawaii, so that was our family reunion; We did not have a family reunion in 2010; In 2012 we went to Cape May, New Jersey; In July or August 2014, we were supposed to go to the Outer Banks in North Carolina, but it got cancelled due to my Grandma's failing health.

My Grandma died in January 2015 and we buried her ashes next to my Grandpa's ashes in Connecticut. My family rented a house in Connecticut on the week of her funeral, in August 2015; In 2016, I do not believe we had a family reunion. In 2017, the family reunion was postponed from the summer to October due to my cousin giving birth to her third child that summer. We rented a house in Northern California (where my cousin and some other family members live). In June or July 2018, we rented a house in Outer Banks. In 2-19, there was no family reunion.

I took this picture during the 2013 family reunion in Sandbridge, but this was the house my family rented for the 2008 reunion. My biggest complaint about this house was that it did not have wireless internet...

As far as I know, none of the houses in Sandbridge have gas heat, probably because there aren't any gas lines in the area. A few of the houses I've seen in Sandbridge DO NOT have central air (only window A/C units), but most do. Since there is no gas, I'd say 95% of them have heat pumps. This is the fate of most heat pumps in Sandbridge within 5 to 10 years! I took this picture in 2013, and I would be surprised if this rustbucket is still around today...

By the way, Concord (look at the nameplate that's partially coming off) is one of many brands that Allied Air Enterprises puts on identical products (Airease and Ducane are two more Allied Air nameplates). Allied Air is owned by Lennox, and manufactured in South Carolina; I don't think they're junk, but I'd never recommend or install in my own home...

These were located at a large beach house, and you can see the first incredibly rusty Concord on the left; The one on the right is clearly newer (and also bears a much more striking resemblance to a base model Lennox)...

Carrier and Bryant (both owned by the same company) make special "Coastal" air-conditioner and heat pumps that are specially treated and designed to withstand this type of environment; Unfortunately, most people do not seem to install these units...

The only "non-coastal" units that seem to withstand this environment are high-end Tranes and certain Carriers; Many of these homes are worth over a million dollars, but the majority of these are built to be rented out for a profit and lived in full-time. As such, cheap materials abound, including HVAC systems. Some of the houses have high-end units (Mostly Trane XL and XLi, a few York Affinity units, but most do not. Another area where the cheapness of the owners shows is the kitchens; Some houses have granite kitchen countertops, but a lot of the newer homes are fitted with laminate countertops in the interest of saving money; Many of these homes were built in the 1970s and 1980s, and the kitchens have never been updated!

This was the house we rented during the 2013 family reunion...

The black Honda Pilot seen in the photo was my dad's and was maybe a month old at the time (it was traded for a 2018 GMC Yukon a year ago). The silver RAV4 belongs to my aunt and uncle, and the beige RAV4 belongs to my cousin; The Ford Escape and the Dodge Grand Caravan were rentals, rented by relatives visiting from California.

Putting laminate countertops in a rental house I can understand, but there are plenty of well-built houses out there with ugly and/or cheap kitchens. Central air is a place you never cut corners, especially in Virginia Beach! However, some of these people are probably making enough money in one week to replace both heat pumps if they were to fail!

There was a framed picture of that house hanging up inside the house, and it had been taken from an airplane in the 1980s when the house was fairly new. You can actually see one of the original heat pumps in the picture, and I was able to identify it as a venerable "GE Executive" like the one from the church I got busted filming!

Another victim of the salty air that I photographed in Sandbridge during the 2013 reunion...

I took a picture of the picture! It would appear, based on this photo, that the house either did not have dual-zone originally, or that the unit in the front of the house was relocated to that spot at some point...

I seem to remember the picture being dated from sometime in the 1980s (and that appears to be a 1986ish Caprice wagon in the driveway); The old GE/Trane units are known for longevity, but given the rate at which salt devours heat pumps in Sandbridge, I highly doubt the heat pump seen in the photo lasted more 12-15 years at the most. This house probably had two or three pairs of heat pumps between the time it was built, and 2013!
