I think it is a great way to avoid falling victim to revenue-hungry small town cops who actively seek out vehicles with out-of-state plates!

The biggest POS 1986 Hyundai came w/intermittent wipers. It boggles my mind some Tacomas did not.

Cruise is handy on long trips, but don't use it a lot either. I only use it in good weather with light traffic.
What does amaze me though is that Toyota doesn't put intermittent wipers as standard equipment on everything... absolutely necessary IMO.

The dealer tech is a freakin idiot. There is no such thing as a notched bearing. There is only a smooth tight bearing or a bearing that feels rough when you spin it. If his “notched” terminology meant it felt rough when he spun it, he had no business, “making it do”. At this point, it’s obvious they’re sending your truck back to the same tech for a redo. I am gonna take a wild guess that he pressed the steel ring onto the axle all the way up against the bearing, like a Ford bearing retainer. I’m sure he didn’t take the time to do the grease test to confirm the correct location of the steel ring. My prediction is that after the 5th seal, they’re gonna come up with some cockamamie BS that you need a new axle shaft or axle housing or something. Another prediction is that if they do manage to get the leak fixed, the bearing will fail shortly after their warrantee on the work expires, because the gear oil has now washed the bearing grease out of the bearing.

    @shakerhood

After about 30 years of trouble-free service, the Rheem air-conditioner at my Grandma’s house started leaking Freon.

This is it’s replacement; Rheem and Ruud have been the same thing since the early 1980s...

I don’t know what to tell you. You might ask Pete if he has the special pipe tool for pressing Toyota bearings off the axle and also if he’s familiar with the grease test to determine the correct location for the steel ring on the axle.

    Fast forward to 50 minutes.

The wipers I can live with, or without. Keep a little rain-x on the glass and the only time I need wipers at all is in a downpour and they need to be full speed then.

Cruise is almost never used, but when it is used is a lifesaver. On shorter trips when only in the truck for a couple of hours I forget I even have it. But I've done some long distance road trips and wouldn't want to be without it. In June I did 1053 miles in 19 hours straight. We made one stop and killed an hour in the KC Cabelas and ate lunch there. Other than that I only stopped for gas and to pee. I probably used cruise for half of those miles.

Strictly a guess, but I’m guessing the original bearing was shot and sloppy which allowed the axle to be upward from the center of the housing, allowing gear oil to leak past the seal. From there, your problems were compounded by a tech that didn’t have a clue what he was doing.

This is pretty common at any sort of ticketed venue or event, not just sports. You aren’t allowed to bring interchangeable lens cameras to most concerts too, for the same reason: control of copyright and interference with the performance. The long and short is it’s a private event on private property; they are allowed to control how the events are recorded, with what and by whom. Cell phone cameras have come a long way yes, but they’re not as good as pro cameras yet and they’re not as obnoxious to fans (usually) who are more interested in the game.

It’s not a bullshit rule, a good chunk of sports teams revenue come from sale of media related to game performance. They get to control how their property and performance is used and sold, just as you get to control the use and sale of your art.

I do not feel like fixing this myself. Should I just cut my losses and take it to someone who will fix it properly?

You could go higher up the chain at the dealer and say, “Look, this yahoo obviously doesn’t know what he’s doing. Do you have ANY techs here that know how to change a rear wheel bearing?”

I just want to chime in that in 147,000 miles, the rear axle and brakes on my "inferior" Frontier have never been touched. (Aside from regular maintenance)

Other than that, I think a conversion is probably pretty pointless. Drum brakes are very low maintenance and they do their job well.

I use the cruise control nearly every time I leave town. Makes for better gas mileage (with a stick shift). Gotta live with the frequent disconnecting in the mountains. It is kind of a pain that it disconnects when you slow 10 mph below the set point. Had a Honda Civic stick shift that never disconnected on the hills.

I figured my truck was already used, so I saved a few bucks (about $50, judging from the entry above) by buying a used intermittent wiper control off the web.
