I think the Frontier is inferior because I rented one in 2014 and it had the turning radius of an aircraft carrier. The ride was also very harsh and I felt every bump. I thought the older Frontiers were good as long as they had tilt steering; I drove a 2002 without tilt steering and my knees touched the steering wheel; The brakes on newer Frontiers are good, but they don’t make up for the truck’s Nimitz-class turning circle!

Oh I know, I'm just ribbing you. No vehicle is perfect, and I'm well aware of the turning radius - mine is the longest one they make. You get used to it, but my taco feels like a go kart in comparison.

When I sold my 97 it had the original rear brakes at around 300K.

The cruise control on my Gen 1 (previous 2001 and now 2003) and Gen 2 (2015) Tacomas is better than nothing, but frankly not much better. On all of my trucks the cruise hunts and downshifts too soon and through too many gears. It'll roar from fourth to second on a mild grade and then not let go until well after the crest. Alternatively, managing it with my right foot and no cruise often barely needs a change in throttle. The cruise module on our Tacomas is really quite dumb by comparison to the one on my 2008 Lexus RX350, as well. That car's cruise control is nearly invisible and downshifts are uncommon and barely noticed.

In even slightly hilly ground I turn off the cruise on my trucks 'cause the d**ned module is such a PITA. I wouldn't pay much to add it to a truck that didn't have it.

I might bring my dad to the dealer tomorrow, as backup. The difference between me and my dad is that I am not as calm and collected as he is...

Ditto here. My '93 had 300K when I sold it a year ago and it still had half the original shoes left. Every few years it's a good idea to take the drums off, blow out the dust and properly lube the points that need it. Other than that completely trouble free and that truck never had a rear bearing issue although the fronts did get replaced once.

    Is it worth it?

Used the cruise exactly twice, I think..., in the 12years I've had the truck. So to me, no it's not worth the trouble but it's your truck.

    blow the dust out?
isn't brake dust harmful to inhale, whether it has asbestos (old cars) or not?
because when you say blow it out, this sounds like using compressed air.

What about rinsing the dust out with a liquid such as water instead? And if it needs to be dry, maybe a final rinse down with more expensive brake cleaner (because it evaporates when drying quickly) or even driving the truck after so that the brakes warm up enough to evaporate the water.

    OME and worth every penny.
I was going to suggest just doing away with them as they don't work anyway. No brake shoe should last 300K if they touch a surface on a regular basis. My Sienna went through them every 50K. I've written several times that I don't think they work unless weight is back there.

I dunno man, I've had trucks that the rear brakes worked fine and never were a problem locking up. When you have ABS, I don't even know why people worry about over braking the rear.

If you give the dealer 3 attempts to repair a problem then you have the legal right to send them the bill that corrected the problem. If you don't give the dealer 3 chances then you don't...
