Really hate to try and put this thread back on track, but something I haven’t seen mentioned yet are the automatic fire suppression systems that are (in my understanding) a mandatory part of self-serve islands.

Here in VT, most stations are self serve. But at least some of the full-serves *will not* allow you to pump your own gas due to an absence of fire suppression at those stations.

I imagine that if New Jersey were to suddenly decide to allow self-serve, they would need to retrofit all of the stations with those systems to satisfy fire codes.

As a funny aside, I went with a friend to NJ to buy a used Rav4. We stopped at a station to fill up, and my friend was out of the truck and already pumping gas before we realized our mistake. An attendant came running over, looks down at our VT license plate, and says, “I’m really supposed to do that for you, but... just go ahead.”

I would guess most modern stations in OR and NJ have pretty robust fire suppression systems if only for insurance purposes, I'll trust a sensor before a minimum wage worker

I have heard some mechanics say that once brake drums are contaminated with gear oil they can not be cleaned because the metal absorbs the oil and will ruin new brake shoes. I personally have not ever had a problem cleaning brake drums and reusing them. If they are really bad I soak them in a parts washer overnight.

Here's a picture of me pumping my own gas in Oregon. It was truly a memorable occasion! Unfortunately it wasn't in the Taco.

As some of you may know, I've been on a Disney movie binge for the last few days; Just for grins, I looked up Pinocchio online and found out something amazing and ridiculous...

When released on VHS for the first time in June 1985, Pinocchio was selling for eight bucks (US$80)!

Also, 101 Dalmatians was first released on VHS in April 1992. My parents bought me that tape, and I watched it so many times that the tape wore out and broke by 1994!

Pets become a part of the family, its hard to lose one. I really love my cat, she is my buddy and even enjoys playing in the garage.
