That changes things lol, if that's the case then he definitely needs to be running higher octane, it'll ping like a mofo and can possibly cause serious damage if he doesn't

On another note, I remember being at a Shell station with my dad right before a major storm hit. It was either a blizzard or a hurricane, but I don’t remember. All I remember is that I had my driver’s license so it was after May 2011, but it was definitely before I upgraded my Taco’s stereo for the first time, which was in March or April 2013.

This gas station was actually out of regular, and we saw a woman in some generic 4-door sedan drive away in disgust after seeing only premium was available. My dad was driving a 2008 Acura TL at the time, and that car took premium, so it didn’t matter to my dad. However, my dad told me that if his car took regular and there was a potential emergency situation, he would have settled for putting premium in it instead of burning more gas searching for a station that still had regular.

THIS. If I run the stock tires my mpg goes up by at least 4.

1999.5-2004 I believe, when they got the 3.5L V6 from the Maxima. My dad’s had the reliable but slightly underpowered 3.3L V6.

That reminds me they used to supercharge the Frontiers and Xterras as well, back in the 90s I think...probably the same time they did the Pathfinders. We have an old Frontier on our block that looks beat to hell with a Nissan 'supercharged' emblem on it.

I know! And I’m saying I would have installed one in my Pathy if we’d kept it!

It's less Tacoma and more mod
Don't worry Charlie, you aren't missing out. The VG33 is a crazy strong engine but that SC is only an MP62 just like the 3.4 TRD one, it's too small and makes only like 210hp on that engine haha. But they love boost at least so a turbo is easy enough.

If you live somewhere cold that's likely your issue along with the aforementioned "lead foot" but don't worry - I'm in the same boat. Cold weather decreases component and fluid temp which creates more friction, and more energy required to move your vehicle. Winter grade fuel has less energy too, it has to evaporate at lower temperatures. You can look into the Reid Pressure Value system for a description of the differences. Cold air is also denser and is less aerodynamic.

My mpg even with stock tires goes from 18 in town to 13.5 in town in the winter with stock tire sizes. Even now that I've switched to E rated 33" tires for summer I'm still getting better summer mileage at 16, vs 13.5 for stock winters. I also live in a town and anywhere I need to go is within city limits and that kills my mileage. I get 22mpg on the highway with 33s.

Here’s the story of the month...

One of our company vans is a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica and I was tasked with taking it through the car wash. There was a black Mercedes G-wagon in front of me. Like the typical drive-thru car wash, this is one of those setups where you put your vehicle in neutral and let a conveyor belt take over.

I typically browse TW while going through the car wash, but on this occasion I happened to look up and realize that the Benz was stopped but the van was still going!

The Pacifica bumped the Benz’s spare tire cover not once but twice. Keep in mind that the van was in neutral and my feet were nowhere near the pedals. Finally, the Benz started moving again. The Pacifica also got stuck at least once and the dryer didn’t even seem to turn on!

As I pulled the van out of the car wash, I saw the guy in the Mercedes looking real hard at me and then inspecting the back end of his SUV.

I pulled over to see if the Pacifica had sustained any damage. If there had been damage, the car wash would have been 100% liable since they were in control of the van at the time of impact. Luckily, there was no damage to the van or the Mercedes and we parted ways...

Guess which car wash I’ll never bring my truck to again?!?!

Those numbers on the sticker are under perfect driving conditions, unloaded with only a 150 lb driver, and at sea level on level ground. Under "normal" driving conditions you will rarely see those numbers on any car or truck. You're doing pretty good.

Your extended idling and use of AC will kill your summer mpg and the winter gas and cold air hurts the winter mpg. Keep an eye on your tire air pressure as well. The Tacoma with the 4 cyl and A4 automatic will never get decent mpg. I do mostly around town driving and rarely get above 45 mph and with 4x4 and 33" tires I've been getting around 17 mpg in the summer and 14.5 in the winter. I don't use AC and I don't idle for any length of time. I run 87 octane.

Do you still have the original catalytic converter in the truck?

My coworker has a late 1990s Chevy 1500 4x4 (not a Silverado but a GMT400) with the 350 and automatic; It is a regular cab long bed with about 250K miles. He claims to average MPGs in the low 20s!

Yeah! No need to replace it...

My truck has never failed an emissions test and the CEL has never come on.
