Yeah, but it’s not like you can hop in your car and drive it across the country!

Last week I took one of my company vans through a drive-thru car wash. There was a Mercedes G-wagon in front of me, and the Mercedes came to a complete stop in front of me while in the drying section...

My van, a 2017 Chrysler Pacifica, kept going and bumped the Benz’s spare fire cover twice. The van was in neutral and I didn’t hit the brakes or anything. The tap was so light that I wasn’t even sure my van had made contact with the Benz. However, as I was pulling out of the wash I noticed the owner of the Benz getting out and inspecting the back end of his vehicle.

I stopped and got out of the van to see if there was any damage, which there didn’t seem to be. The owner of the Benz walked over and was just as dumbfounded as me, saying he thought he felt something too. I immediately told him that it was a (A) a company vehicle and not mine, and (B) that I had no control over the van while it was on the conveyor belt. He told me that his Benz had actually gotten stuck for no rhyme or reason.

He said there was no damage and told me to just go...

Fast-forward a week and I brought it up to the manager of the same car wash when I brought another company vehicle in for a wash. The manager is this hispanic woman in her 30 or 40s, and she seemed rather incensed that I’d accuse her “$800,000 tunnel” of malfunctioning in any way. She said that if there had been damage, I would have had to call the police and go through insurance because it wouldn’t be their problem.

I say again that this woman seemed to think that the fact she’d “been doing this for twenty years” and that the tunnel cost $800K meant that nothing could go wrong and they were exempt from all liability. I know a couple of attorneys who’d probably say differently...

She said that people hit the brakes in the car wash all the time, and that I should have hit the horn if I wanted the wash to be stopped (How was I supposed to know this?). I was too freaked out by the fact that my van was about to hit a Mercedes to do anything. I was not about to hit the brakes myself because I was afraid of damaging either the van or the car wash.

I am not 100% sure I believe that the Benz driver is to blame, but guess where I will not be bringing my Tacoma anymore?!?!

If it’s mechanical, electrical, and programmed by humans...it’s doomed.

After talking with my dad, it seems like the Benz driver more than likely did hit their brakes due to the fact that he was so apologetic and didn’t seem to care about my van bumping his $120K SUV...

Boeing has been making airplanes that cost tens of millions for how many years and we got the 737 Max issues. She doesn't have a leg to stand on with that logic.
