I watched Gremlins and all three Back to the Future movies in company president's Escalade today, and I just learned something ironic...

For starters, Gremlins was released in late summer of 1984 (ironic consider it set during Christmas) and the first BTTF movie was released in July 1985, so they're barely a year apart.

Gremlins is set in the fictional town of Kingston Falls, but the state in which it is located is never given. All three Back to the Future films are set in Hill Valley, California. What I found out is that the set used for the "town center" of Kingston Falls (or at least parts of it) is the very same one used to represent Hill Valley!

Also, I will notice details that nobody else gives a shit about in movies, especially when it comes to cars. The Sopranos, for example, was very detailed when it came to cars. A lot of the New Jersey license plates were fake, but vehicles are consistently seen with New Jersey and New York inspection stickers.

In one movie that is notably set in Pennsylvania, 2010's Unstoppable, several of the vehicles driven by characters have a front and rear plate.

In the 2003 slasher film Wrong Turn, the main character drives a 1967 Ford Mustang (see bottom of this post) which not only has two Pennsylvania plates, but has a completely incorrect format. Pennsylvania has always issued this style of plate with the ABC-1234 format...

Below is a picture of the main character's '67 Mustang in Wrong Turn; As if the overall design of the plate didn't look fake enough, it uses a completely wrong 123-ABCD format!

I'm pretty sure a '67 Mustang would have always been exempt from emissions testing, but the car lacks a safety inspection windshield sticker, which is required for all vehicles in Pennsylvania not registered as antique/classic!

It is horror movie that was filmed on a budget of less than $13 million, so I will cut them some slack...

Sadly, the Mustang is totaled fairly early in the movie, when the main character takes his eyes off the road briefly to put a CD in the CD player (It has been at least 13 years since I've seen this movie, but I remember that the Mustang had a modern aftermarket CD player) and slams into the back of another character's Range Rover that is stuck by the side of the road with a flat tire (the mountain bikes seen in the still shot were on the back of the Range Rover)...

The aftermath of the Mustang rear-ending the Ranger Rover; The couple seen lounging on the hood ends up having sex on the hood, letting down their guard, and getting brutally murdered by inbred mountain men (the movie takes place somewhere in rural West Virginia)...

Okay, so let's go back to Gremlins; I first saw the original Gremlins on TV in 1999 or so. My parents bought it for me on DVD in 2003 or so. I just recently bought it on BluRay last week, on Amazon. For a number of reasons, I thought it was fictional town of Kingston Falls was somewhere in upstate New York (or perhaps somewhere near Buffalo or Rochester)...

    • The movie opens in the Chinatown district of NYC, where the main character's father is browsing looking for Christmas gifts for his son.
    • NYC is implied to be within a few hours or no more than a day's drive from Kingston Falls when Billy's father arrives home from his trip.
    • There is a lot of snow on the ground throughout the entire movie, which indicative of somewhere in the far Northeast or New England.

Gremlins 2: The New Batch is set in New York City, but I no longer believe the original Gremlins is set in the state New York for the following reasons:

    • None of the vehicles seen in the original 1984 movie have front license plates.
    • After rewatching Gremlins 2: The New Batch (the 1990 sequel, which has a 69% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but was a box office bomb), one of the supporting characters mentions taking a 32-hour ride on a Greyhound bus* from Kingston Falls to New York City.
*I may have misheard the dialogue, or the character could have been exaggerating...

Kingston Falls is obviously in a state where it snows a lot during the winter, and if the lack of front license plates is not seen as oversight by the producers, in a state that does not require front license plates; Also considering the proximity of Kingston Falls to New York City, I have narrowed down its location to the following states...

    • Delaware
    • Indiana
    • Kansas
    • Kentucky
    • Michigan
    • Pennsylvania
    • West Virginia

If the lack of front license plates is ignored, Kingston Falls could be located in any of the "one-plate states" listed above, plus...

    • Connecticut
    • Illinois
    • Maine
    • Maryland
    • Massachusetts
    • Nebraska
    • New Hampshire
    • New York
    • Rhode Island
    • Vermont
    • Virginia
    • Wisconsin

North Carolina seems possible, but might be a bit too far South to get the amount of snow seen in the movie.

It might shock some people to learn that the Delorean is NOT my favorite vehicle in the trilogy; A picture of my favorite vehicle in BTTF can be seen below...

Here is my honest opinion on the Delorean...

A Delorean in original, as-new form is a piece of junk! Here's my list of reasons why:

    • An underpowered V6 engine that was also not very reliable.
    • An inadequate air-conditioning system that struggled even the car was brand new.
    • Tiny little "vent windows" that exacerbated the problem with the A/C
    • A stark and cheap-looking interior

That said, I still love the Delorean and would buy one in a heartbeat if I hit the lottery or somehow managed to get rich! I would replace the shitty V6 with a Chevy small block (and hopefully a 6-speed manual tranny) for starters, and also go out of my way to get the air-conditioner working to my satisfaction...

Once my Delorean had respectable (and reliable) power under the hood, and air-conditioning that worked at least as good as the A/C in my Tacoma, I would do the following:

    • Ground-pounding stereo system much like the one I've got in my Taco, but with the added bonus of a subwoofer box that looks like a flux capacitor
    • In addition to a ground-pounding, obnoxiously-loud-if-I-want-it-to-be stereo system, I would definitely make sure the head unit I chose had Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay
    • Backup camera
    • Replace open rear diff with a posi/LSD unit
    • Upgraded suspension for better handling
    • Window tint, primarily to help the A/C cool the cabin more efficiently
    • BTTF-themed vanity license plate

I had the honor of sitting in a Delorean at a cruise night back in May 2012!

The unwritten rule of car shows (and vehicles in general) is look but don’t touch, but on that rare occasion when I’ve actually had a desire to sit in a vehicle at a show, NOT ONE OWNER has EVER said no when I asked!

Also, the lime green '69 Road Runner seen in the background in both pictures belongs to my friend's dad, and I have actually ridden in that!

I have been almost six feet tall since at least the end of high school...

Surprisingly, I do not really tower over a Delorean when standing next to it, and as you can see in the other two pictures I fit behind wheel quite comfortably!

This is one of all-time favorites; It was at an antique truck show in Macungie, Pennsylvania back in June 2017...

It is a 1985 Chevy K5 Blazer with the rare combination (in my opinion) of a factory manual transmission and factory A/C; Like with the Delorean owner in 2012, I just asked politely if I could sit in it and the owner said yes. The owner was even kind enough to take the pictures!
