I think my unit is just old as I have to set it higher each year to keep the room temperature at 70, so far this year that requires me setting it at 74 - 75.

    And I'm telling you...

GET A HEAT PUMP! It will save you money on propane! A heat pump with propane furnace backup is a great system!

I'm saying that you should get a heat pump in addition to a propane furnace...

However, while it is okay to run electric backup heat at the same time as a heat pump, do not run the furnace simultaneously along with the heat pump or else the refrigerant will get superheated, the system will overheat, and something like this could happen...

Yeah, it seems much easier for me to just stick with whatever that furnace guy has written for me.

By the way, I was exaggerating there; Yes that is a central A/C unit that's actually on fire, but I don't know if it's a heat pump or just a straight-cool unit, or even what caused the fire...

I doubt that running a gas furnace simultaneously with a heat pump will cause it to spontaneously combust; However, if you have a dual-fuel system with the indoor coil above the furnace, running both simultaneously will cause serious damage to the heat pump. When a heat pump is in HEAT mode, the refrigerant is hot. If there is a gas furnace blasting heat on the coil, the refrigerant will become even hotter and basically cook the whole unit!

She said the guy is supposedly coming this weekend and doesn't know the brand yet other than he said something about a merger or someone building the system under another brand name. She also said that she told him that she would prefer Trane or American Standard so we will see what he brings.

What did he quote her? Less than five grand? Ain't gonna be no Trane or American Standard!

Yeah he definitely quoted her under five, I told her not to get either of the 2 you listed.

She is convinced that it's going to save her thousands, I told her to just keep her expectations in check.

By getting a heat pump she will definitely save thousands. That meme is in reference to her current heating system!
