My parents and cousin think I should rent an apartment to get an idea of what it's really like to live independently; I want to live with my parents until I have enough to buy a condo. A lot of my friends agree with me; What should I do?

I’d rather live on my own honestly. I have lived on my own since 17. I recently stayed at my parents house for a month an I couldn’t see living with them full time. As much as I loved hanging around I need my own space.

It would take a year for me to save up enough money to rent a decent apartment (as in a place with central air and it’s own washer/dryer that isn’t a total dump).

Renting a dump will make you appreciate your next place more

No harm in getting your feet wet without going swimming.

See how you like living alone by renting. This gives you overall feel of what things will be like (rent/mortgage, food, utilities, etc). Do a 6 month lease and go from there.

That’s just my thoughts on the subject.

There are three things I must have...
    • Air-conditioning (Because I cannot stand sleeping without A/C in the summer)
    • Washer/Dryer (Because I don't feel like going to a laundromat or back to my parents' house)
    • Dishwasher (Because I'm lazy)

And when I say dump, it's more the demographic of people the apartments attract; I could buy apartment in Warminster with central air, a full kitchen, and washer/dryer for $100K; But my best friend's parents bought two condos in this same complex (one for my Aspie friend to live in and one for them to live in when they retire and sell their current house). They ended up selling both condos within a year and a half largely because of the riffraff that moved in.

I guess one of my biggest fears is that the years will just fly by and before long I will have been there almost a decade; One of my Aspie friends has lived in his apartment for almost seven years now and recently told me he kinda wishes he would have stayed with his parents a little bit longer so he could save up for a townhouse (his current goal).

Are you going to be in Doylestown soon, if you aren't already here?

@4x4Runner changed the "unfunny pictures" thread to reflect my recent posting of pictures of boats with funny names; Should I be honored?

The first PG-13 movie I ever saw was Twister, at the age of 11. I proceeded to immediately annoy my dad by commenting every time Bill Paxton cussed, and if he said that if I continued to make a comment every time somebody swore, I wouldn't be allowed to watch anymore PG-13 movies. It was the summer of 2000, and my mom's side of the family spent a week at my paternal Grandma's two lake houses. My Grandma's cousin, who lived across the lake, let us kids raid her VHS tape collection. One of the movies I chose was Twister, having never seen it before. My one older cousin who was 14 at the time, chose a bunch of movies that were far from appropriate, including 8MM; His mom was not too happy and wouldn't let him watch it.

The first time I saw an R-rated movie was in 2003 at the age of 14; It was The Terminator.
