Before you get carried away with tearing into an engine.
    Or swapping oil viscosity.
Just fill it up with the current type oil in the truck (0w-20)
Then check regularly until you see what is happening.

@12TRDTacoma No offense to you man.
    You have good info here.
And what you are saying is good advice.
But I don’t see any reason for the OP to get worked up just yet.

OP, I will say that my Grandfather has a Dodge Hemi 5.7.
He will burn up a 1 quart of oil in about 5k.
Other times he doesn’t use much at all.

Don’t sweat it just yet buddy.
Let time tell you what needs to be done.

I agree man. I agree. There is no sense in crossing bridges that need not yet be crossed, but if he wants to conduct a proper test of oil consumption, he could either step down the interval (under 3k and he already burnt through a quart of 0-20 so I don't think it would be good test weight to go with nor is it the right way to go right now) or he can use thicker weight and step down the interval at the same time which is what I would personally do. That would probably tell him what he needs to know and then he can make a decision from there based on his findings.

110K is too soon for an engine and if it were my own I would just top it off before changes until I either get sick of doing that or the engine starts burning more than I am okay with.

if he changed the engine the 1.2 doesn’t count....

So change the oil at 110K but keep using 0W-20?

Good morning! What do you think of switching to a higher viscosity oil?

My new bumper just left a “carrier facility” in Chicago; Amazon says arriving between February 6th and February 10th, but I have a feeling it’ll get here sooner than that!

    Alright...

I had my doubts about abruptly switching to 5W-30, and my mechanic confirmed those doubts!

My mechanic has been doing what he does for more than forty years, and he said that using anything other than the manufacturer recommended oil especially on a VVT engine like mine could lead to problems. My owner’s manual says that 5W-20 is acceptable, so if I see the need to switch viscosity I will do that. I will also start changing the oil every 6K instead of every 7K; I know it’s Mobil 1, but I’m a bit paranoid.

I have a 2TR-FE with 110K+ miles. I use 5W-30 with no issues even though the manual says 5W-20. 5W-30 is fine unless you're in Antarctica. I use Mobil 1 and change the oil every 10-11k miles. At most it's a half quart low when I change it. If you are using some oil, the typical first cause is the valve stem seals, and not the guides. The Toyota one quart usage every 600 miles is ridiculous and to stop warranty claims. If you're using a quart every 2000 miles or so, then I wouldn't worry, but just monitor the situation. It's excessive, but to fix it is going to be costly.

My manual says either 0W-20 or 5W-20. I’m thinking I’ll switch to the 5W-20...

I currently run Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 0W-20 and change it every 7K miles.

So like @12TRDTacoma mentioned, you could try using 5w-30. This is not going to hurt your engine at all, and likely the only reason Toyota recommends the 0w is for fuel economy. Now the difference could be .0001 mpg which you obviously would not notice, but when you sell as many vehicles as toyota it adds up.

I am going to upload a picture from amsoil which is comparing their oil. Same type of oil, just in different weights so you can see an apples to apples comparison.
    CAE87B0C-500A-49FF-98FD-9E07F2F353C0.jpg
highlighted in yellow is how much oil evaporates under heat. While amsoil has very low losses as it is, you can see the 0w-20 lost 1.5 grams more than the 5w-30 oil did. Interestingly the 5w-20 oil has the least amount of loss compared to 5w-30 and 0w-20.
Also below highlighted in blue is how much force to shear. The higher number the more protected your metal on metal parts will be. The 5w-30 beats the 0w-20 and 5w-20.
Combine this info with the fact Toyota used to spec 5w-30 for the same engine in earlier year trucks, you will not hurt your engine at all by switching grades. If anything you will be helping it last longer.

The owner's manual for my '06 RC calls for 5W-30 and I've used it for the last 140,000 miles without issue. Toyota issued a TSB saying it was okay to use 5W-20 a couple of years later, but I never did. I am not aware of any engine changes between '06 and '10 models but I cant be sure.

Oil change intervals have always been recommended at 5,000 miles regardless of viscosity or dino/synthetic, though many blackstone test results on this site revealed the ability to go higher.

I have a Subaru that uses some oil but not enough for Subaru to do anything about it. After a lot of trial and error, I found that using Pennzoil Platinum (PP) reduced the consumption greatly. Later, I found out that PP has a lower NOACK value than most other easy-to-find oils out there, so that's probably why.

What grade is called for in your truck? My old 2nd Gen 4.0's called for 5W-30.

    @El Duderino

I know I asked you something about this before because of your medical expertise, but I forget what you told me...

Almost 18 years ago, when I was 13 years old, I sprained my ankle; The sprain was so minor that no obvious injuries appeared on the X-ray. The doctor gave me the choice between a standard brace and crutches, or this bulky moonboot-like aircast that would allow me to walk normally without crutches. Using crutches did not appeal to me in the slightest, and that point in my life I’d never used them, so I opted for the walking brace and wore that for less than a week before switching to a smaller and less noticeable ankle brace; I’d say it took less than a month for my ankle to heal fully...

The question I have for you is this; If I got the same injury today, would I be given a choice in orthopedic devices, or would I automatically be given crutches?

This girl I used to date sprained her ankle pretty badly and had to use an aircast like the one I had, and crutches.

To date, I have never worn a cast or used crutches for any kind of injury, and I hope it stays that way!

My warranty ran out at the end of September 2014. Should I stay with 0W-20 or switch to 5W-20? My owner’s manual says the truck can take both; I am too paranoid to switch to 5W30
