One thing that utterly amazed me is that none of the homes or businesses you get to explore seem to have been looted; TVs, DVD players, computers, and other expensive electronics have been rotting for two decades. Homes also contain items that the player can take, like ammo, first aid supplies, and alcohol; Again, it truly amazes me that none of this stuff was taken sometime prior to 2020 (again, the pandemic begins in 2013 and the game takes place in 2033-2034)!

 

My favorite place to explore is a middle class neighborhood in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (haven’t gotten there yet in the remastered version of the game I’m playing now); There must be at least half a dozen homes that you can go in, and they are so detailed that they even have central air-conditioners on the side! Specifically, they resemble builder grade Carrier units; For some reason, the homes in Lincoln, Massachusetts do not have central air (or maybe they do but it was an oversight). The apartment in Lincoln has a window A/C unit...

 

About halfway through the game, you end up in Jackson, Wyoming. When secondary character Ellie runs off, you follow her to what is probably the most beautiful and well-detailed house in the whole game. The house is bigger than any houses in the game you can explore, and while not quite a mansion, I’d say it’s in excess of 3,000 square feet! Also unlike other houses, this one is remarkably well-preserved considering that it’s been vacant and unused for the better part of a decade! Upon entering the house, you can tell immediately that it’s been vacant for a while due to dust and some mold, but nothing is damaged and nothing appears to have been stolen; The house has likely been spared due to its remote location.

How hard do you guys think it would be to get a “post-apocalyptic” Tacoma started after it sat for two decades? Let’s say for the sake of argument that the truck was well-maintained before being abandoned, and it has not been vandalized...

It doesn't even have to be an apocalypse or pandemic; Let’s just say the truck has been sitting for two decades...

After changing all of the fluids and replacing the battery, would the truck start right up?

 

This reminds me of an old Twilight Zone Episode, a group of thieves steal gold and hold up in a cave inside of these caskets asleep for 50 years without aging. The vehicle they stashed away started and ran but the rubber brake lines rotted and it flew off a cliff. I do think a properly prepared vehicle that has been stashed away for an extended period would fire up and run.

Honestly, both of these look like they were stripped of copper...

 

Or design oversight by the game developers...

 

The sizable house on the secluded ranch I was talking about yesterday...

 

Heading inside the house; The house is musty and shows obvious signs of deterioration that come from being vacant for twenty years, but is remarkably well-preserved otherwise...



Other houses in the game are trashed and have significant mold; This place actually looks repairable!

The kitchen, outdated but large and well-equipped...

 

Like the rest of the house, the kitchen is grimy, but well-preserved; The wall oven appears to be from the 1970s or 1980s...

 

Note that the kitchen does not have a dishwasher. A few of the explorable houses and apartments have dishwashers, but most do not; This was most likely just another oversight by the developers...



Note the dirt and grime on the wallpaper and floor; In the Pittsburgh suburbs, some of the houses have electric coil stoves, but right next door another house will have a gas stove...

This place clearly has a gas stove, and given the remote location it is probably propane; It also likely has central A/C.

 

The large laundry room, with fairly new washer, but an older dryer (I forget whether it was the washer or the dryer, but my parents had a matching Kenmore washer and dryer from the late 1980s; One of them failed in the late 1990s and they bought a new one, so we had a mismatched set; Very realistic, and I’ll bet both would work if the house had electricity!)...

 

Back in the kitchen; Huge pro-style gas rangetop, resembling a Viking or Wolf product...
