You say that. But China is the reason your PS4 doesn't cost $800. Or the reason you can buy a laundry basket at Wal-Mart for $5.99.

Not defending it. It just is what it is. It hasn't been 1950 in a very long time. We've operated in a global environment for a very long time now

It just sucks that a country that not only mistreats and oppresses its people, but is pretty much responsible for coronavirus, leads the world in producing consumer goods...

One thing I really don't understand is why Toyota kept using Dana as its frame supplier when the frames were clearly defective, regardless of where the "formula" came from!

Correct. It’s pretty simple. $5 part from China costs 5 cents to make thanks to super cheap labor( some poor person making a $ dollar day) in the US that some part cost $50 thanks to some union worker making $35 hour to stand in the same spot all day and push the green button on the machine, get 4 weeks paid vacation, paid for healthcare goes on strike and still gets his paycheck. It sucks but it was it is. I assure you bring back all manufacturing here and cost of goods on the shelves will skyrocket then everyone will bitch why does it cost so much.

THIS. The average person always think items made in China are destined to be crap. It’s a two way street, very high quality items can come out of China with the right quality systems, supply chain integration, audits/inspections. The same applies to made in USA items, it would a poor quality product if none of those investments in quality were in place. Still, there are a lot of garbage coming out of China because of cheap labor combined with the established manufacturing infrastructure (just browse Amazon for ANYTHING and you’ll find these cheap alternatives) but you just have to know who was behind product. I trust that Toyota have very high standards for what is acceptable from their suppliers throughout the world.

It wasn’t 1950 actually it was 1972 when we opened up talks with china. It took decades to shift manufacturing there. It’s not a political issue it’s all business. I’m old enough having grown up in 60s to have seen it happen. Then they were a communist country guess what they still are. Those of you talking them up are either misinformed or ignorant to history. It helps to have done a stint in the military. They don’t sugar coat who our friends and allies are. Because you can save a dime buying their products makes your country weak. Keep doing what is right for you screw everyone else

True. I believe every 1st gen was made at Nummi in Fremont. My '06 was built there too. They quit in 2009.

Things can be made cheap in the US. Perhaps not as cheap as China. Due to cheap labor and in some cases easier/cheaper access to raw materials. It’s just penny pinching companies that are trying to save a few more dollars to increase their profit margins are what the problem is.

I spent 36 years in manufacturing. I also spent time in China. Trust me, we cannot make most things here anywhere near as cheap as they can in China. In the US, wages, benefits, taxes, environmental regulations, union contacts, etc. all drive significantly higher costs to manufacture here.

I’ve never understood why car makers choose high cost states (CA) for their assembly lines.

Believe it or not China produces quality OEM parts for auto manufacturers and even produces quality vehicles. I’d rather plant myself in a Chinese-made car than most any current FCA product. Prices reflect that also for the consumer so if you pay cheap for Chinese parts, that’s what you’re going to get. Their metal casting is on par or better than most to include many US manufacturers. There. I said it.

@PennSilverTaco Finally got around to snapping a pic of the trunk for you. That leather bag is where the sunroof goes and you can see the belts that loop through too.20200428_193446.jpg

I never said most things can be manufactured here as cheap as China. Obviously it’s really cheap to manufacture in China. I work in a tire plant. We have plants in Japan, one in Taiwan, and Africa. While this isn’t China the tires we make and sell we also make in other plants and sell here for the same price. Obviously the profit margins are different and the US plant has a lot higher operating cost (production issues, and only union plant with really high wages) However they desperately need our tires and shipping them from overseas decreases their profit margins, and increases timeframes. US companies can still be competitive in ways is all I’m saying.

Not only tax incentives but CA is a good place because of the ports. Easy shipping from places like China and Japan.
