If you look up at the picture on the box the kid is left handed, if l remember correctly the 2 holes in the roof were for left or right handed use.

Anybody remember the Pokémon Go! craze of less than five years ago? I may as well start this post by saying that I wasn’t in to Pokémon when I was a kid in the late 90s, and I was into it almost twenty years later, and the following picture accurately describes how I saw Pokémon Go! players...

I only got about 35 out of those. They had tread left to get at least another 10-15k but the winter traction was really scary at that point.

I almost ran over at least one of these Pokémon zombies because they were more focused on catching that charizard than paying attention to traffic, and essentially jaywalked in front of my truck when I wasn’t expecting it...

We went to Malibu for our annual family reunion in July 2016, and one day we went to Santa Monica; Kids of all ages playing this game were everywhere! They were easy to pick out because they had portable phone chargers in their pockets and they weren’t paying attention to where they were going; I almost collided with a few of these Pokémon zombies because they weren’t paying attention to their surroundings...

The Pokémon Go! craze so thoroughly swept Doylestown, and people inadvertently walking onto private property became such a problem, that the police posted a PSA on their Facebook page asking people to be mindful of where they walked; This was accompanied by a screenshot from the personal cell phone of a cop who played the game, showing a rare Pokémon inside the police station’s garage...

Pokémon Go!’s popularity seemed to to fluctuate greatly from 2017 onward, and I’m pretty sure people still play it now, but it was definitely at its most popular in 2016; I guess one positive thing about the game is that it got kids out of the house...

Anyway, like I said, I didn’t even get it into Pokémon in the late 1990s when most of my classmates were into it, and then in 1999 or so a story came on the news about a 5th grader being beaten up and robbed of his Pokémon cards; This solidified my decision not to get into it...

I didn’t get into Yu-Gi-Oh either; And anybody remember pogs from the early-to-mid 1990s? I believe my dad may have bought me a set of pogs at my request so I would fit in, but I never really played with them.

The only fad I went along with back in the day was Beanie Babies, and I didn’t collect them; Sure, I probably had like fifty of the damn things by the start of the new millennium, but I always removed the tags and played with them! Still have ‘em somewhere...

Yup, first winter they were great, second winter they weren't. Started feeling like I was on ice all the time: 15-20 MPH in a couple inches of snow and slush and I kept going straight when trying to make a corner. Another time on packed snow I was going maybe 30 and started slowing for a road at least 500 ft in advance (slight downhill incline), ABS went nuts no matter how lightly I braked and the 500 ft was just enough to slow down for the turn. I ditched them after those two experiences and got Grabber AT2s, which were fantastic. Don't know about longevity on them though since I traded that truck after running them for about 10k.

When we lived in Pennsylvania the first time around, I don’t remember there being a Blockbuster Video or a Hollywood Video in the area; There were two privately owned video rental places that we went to, within a couple miles of
each other. The one my parents took me to the most was in a huge shopping center at the intersection of 202 and County Line Road; This place also repaired VCRs, and amazingly enough it was more cost-effective to repair a VCR than to replace it back then. I forget what was wrong with it, but we got our Hitachi VCR repaired there at least once.

The other video store was located in a much smaller shopping center at Five Points, probably two or three miles up the road from the first place; Both video stores were still there when we moved to California in 1996, but were long gone by the time we came back here in 2005. The popularity of movie rental places was just starting to wane by then, and I personally haven’t rented a video since we lived in Northern Virginia (we lived there from 2002 to 2005); Actually, I should say I haven’t rented a video since we left Whidbey Island in 2002. From 2002 onward, I always rented DVDs; Now that we have a vehicle with a BlueRay player, I almost exclusively buy BluRay Discs!

The Five Points shopping center is still there, and has a a bike shop and a pizza place among other businesses, but the Pier 1 Imports that I remember having been there since we first moved here in 1990 went under in the spring of 2020, presumably from lack of business due to the COVID pandemic :(

Another thing I remember about living in North Wales from 1990 to 1996 was that one of our neighbors directly across the street had a Chevy Malibu station wagon, with the taillights in the bumper like an El Camino. This variation of the Malibu was produced from 1978 to 1983, so this means the car was at least ten years old by the time of the 1993 “Storm of the Century”. The car was not in bad shape at all, but in a relatively upscale suburban neighborhood it stood out; As someone whose daily driver is currently possibly older now than that station wagon was in 1993, I fully understand why that guy held onto the car as long as he did. I too would drive a 10-year old station wagon if it meant I could afford what was at the time a $230K 4-bedroom colonial!

So, our neighbor was drove an early 1980s Malibu station wagon until at least 1994, and like most rear-drive station wagons it had an open rear end; This translated to a car that did really poorly in the snow. On at least two occasions following two different major snowfalls, my dad went across the street to help our neighbor get his old Chevy unstuck so he could could get to work...

The neighbor’s Malibu wagon looked a lot like this one, though I don’t remember what color it was...

And I do remember that it had this style of front end as opposed to the more the more flat front end with the egg crate grille and quad headlights...

This would make the car no newer than 1981 (not 1983) and at least 12 years old the last time my dad helped free it from the snow!

There is also a slight possibility it could have been a Pontiac, but I’m pretty sure it was a Chevy Malibu...
