Going back to what you said about Chevy Celebrities, I’ve talked to a few people who owned them, and also read write-ups from people owned them; Some thought they were excellent cars, and others thought they were pieces of shit...

In the 1980s, my friend’s mom’s ex-husband traded her 1970s Oldsmobile with a Rocket V8 for a new Celebrity without first consulting her; Contrary to what you might be thinking, this is not what led to the divorce, but she hated this car. At one point, she tied a rope around the back bumper and used the car to pull a plant out of the ground!

I rarely see Celebrities on the road anymore, but when I do, they are fairly well-preserved and in okay condition; My verdict would be that they were mediocre in terms of styling*, build quality, and handling, but if you took of care of them they would last...

*They’re not the best-looking cars out there, but I don’t think they’re particularly bad-looking; I like the body styling, and I think part of the reason I like them is because they are essentially the same car as an Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera!

My neighbor across the street is a school principal, but he started out barbacking and worked his way up to bartending; He basically bartended his way through college...

His very first car when he got his license in the mid-1990s was a 1987 or 1988 Chevy Celebrity; He hated the car, but it was cheap, it was reliable, and it had working A/C. He promptly installed a stereo system that cost more than what he paid for the car, which included a Sony CD/cassette head unit; One night, while he was bartending at a restaurant in Philly, someone stole the car...

The thief was a druggie, and crashed the Celebrity into several parked vehicles during their joyride; They also left drug paraphernalia inside the car, totally trashed the interior, and stole the aforementioned Sony head unit. He had full coverage despite the car being about ten years old (this happened in like 1998 or 1999), and he was hoping the insurance company would total it; Amazingly enough, they didn’t total it! He ended up trading it for a new Blazer in 2000...

Very true..they were never going to be something you'd pick up girls in or win races with. Wasn't meant to be. Mine both were already over 100K when I got them and of course the 86 looked like it had been through a war, but the price was right and for a college student they served me well. Dollar for dollar, I got the most value out of those cars than anything really and that even includes my Tacoma.

Though the trade in you mentioned, that should be grounds for divorce!!

Any of you ever heard of a Subaru Justy? Tiny little subcompact hatchback, roughly the size of a Ford Festiva but with four doors and of much higher quality; They made them from the late 1980s until 1993, and they only had a 3-cylinder engine!

    :ballchain:

In typical Subaru fashion, AWD was also an option (may have been standard); One of the teachers at my middle school in Oak Harbor, Washington had one of these. It was silver or gray in color, 5-speed manual, and AWD, but it did not have A/C; I’ve seen pictures of these cars that did have A/C, but in typical Pacific Northwest fashion this one did not...

The car also only had an AM/FM stereo and no cassette or CD, and I’m guessing it was a 1992 or 1993 model; Despite being older and sparsely optioned, it was near-mint. I never knew the teacher who owned it, but I’m guessing they lived on Whidbey Island...

Can you imagine, though? A 3-banger dividing less than 100hp between four wheels?

My art teacher in 6th and 7th grade lived on the mainland (not on Whidbey Island), and if he had any money he certainly did not show it; In 2000-2002, he drove an early 1980s Oldsmobile Cutlass sedan that looked like it had been pulled from a junkyard, registered, and put back on the road without any attempt to make it look halfway presentable. The paint was almost completely peeled off, the car has significant (but not detrimental) rust, and bits and pieces of trim were missing; It had been a very well-equipped car, and it definitely did have A/C, but I remember my teacher telling me that it did not work.

My art teacher had a wife and at least two kids, and there other vehicle (which I don’t remember him ever driving to work) was what he described as a very rusty 1989 Ford Aerostar; A lot of the faculty and staff drove older but very well-maintained vehicles that were older than I was!

Yup. One of my managers at Burger King had a 89 when I worked there in 1990-91. Came in the ECVT automatic or standard (which is the one she had). Hers was not AWD. She said she wanted a red Mustang but could only afford a red Justy..haha.

Hers was a 3 door as well, not the most common but they were out there.

And under 100 yikes. I had to look but the most HP you got with one of those was 73..came as low as 47.

On another, non-car-related note, my art teacher in Oak Harbor was someone who I initially liked and regarded as very nice, but by 2002 I’d written off as a bit of an asshole...

One time, in class, I stomped on the foot of a kid who regularly bullied me as a not-so-subtle way of saying “I’ve had enough of your shit, so shut the fuck up!”

The art teacher, who’d long been known for defending me from kids who teased me, made a write an apology letter to the bastard!

Another time, I forget exactly what I did, but I did something else where I had to write “I will not...” a certain number of times; We had been working outside on our current projects because it was nice out and we didn’t want to get high off the paint fumes, and to make the punishment even more unpleasant he made me write my sentences while sitting out in the sun!

I am still fairly close with my best friend from Oak Harbor Middle School; He is now married and living like 20 or 30 minutes from me!

In an incident totally unrelated to the two stories above (and this happened years after we’d all graduated), the same art teacher allegedly posted pictures of his dick on my friend’s older brother’s social media account (forget what social media it was) while drunk!

Yup GM had the paint peel issues a lot back then. Gotta love that quality control...

    @ABA180

Here’s another thing I’d like to put out there; I think the cost of traffic tickets and fines is just too damn high!

There’s this guy on YouTube called “DDS TV” who uses peoples’ dashcam footage with their permission and compiles them into roughly 10-minute long videos; He has the best such videos on YouTube in my opinion!

In one of his more recent videos, one clip was from a guy who got pulled over by a Tennessee state trooper for doing 95 or 96 in a 70 MPH zone; The guy was very polite to the cop, but he still got stuck with a $440 ticket and 6 points on his license. In the cop’s own words, he was going “way too fast”, but $440 is just plain extortion in my opinion!

Luckily, the guy went to court, fought it, and got it knocked down to a $76 fine with just two points on his license...

My friend Doug got a $500 fine right here in Central Bucks when he got pulled over for going 28 MPH in a school zone (15 MPH); However, all the buses had left and there was no danger in my opinion considering the normal speed limit is like 35 MPH; He fought the ticket and got it knocked down to $95 with no points on his license.

And there’s my friend who got a DUI not because she was actually drunk, but because was 20 years old and blew a .02! Oh, the humanity! She also had weed in the car, and she ended up losing her license for six months and paying thousands of dollars in fines and lawyer fees. What angers me and most of the people who have heard this story is that she was just days away from turning 21, and the only reason she got pulled over was because she was driving her shitbox ‘92 Saturn with a bunch of friends in the car after midnight!

And don’t even get me started on the number of people I know who lost their licenses for “underage drinking” when they were nowhere near a car! DUI is DUI and offenders should be punished accordingly, but losing one’s license just for underage drinking when they weren’t driving...?

I should mention that PennDOT recently lost a lawsuit brought by two men who both lost their driver’s licenses for drug offenses that had nothing to do with driving, and they not only got their driving privileges back but got a decent amount of money as well!

Last I knew here it's $50 for the first 10 over and $10 a mile after. Plus a forced $25 "donation" to the head injury fund which is the part that really burns me. It's not a donation if I'm not making it of my own free will. Never looked into other states though. I will have to check that channel out, I do sub to several that deal with policing in general.

I do agree that 96 is way too fast though..

Legally she isn't supposed to be drinking at all, the .02 is the threshold here. At 21 it's .08 or higher. Obviously marijuana possession is not legal anyway at least far as I know in PA?

Even as a convicted drunk driver myself I do agree with the under 21 being so harsh. What really sucks is how it affects the rest of my life in some ways even though it was so long ago and not one in which any injury or damage (except to myself) occurred.

IDK how much her case was but you would be surprised what all mine cost me.
