So, my friend Justin has a white 2007 access cab SR5 2WD 2.7L automatic with approximately 130K miles on the odometer. The truck recently failed the annual safety inspection because the frame is so rusted, and the dealership is giving Justin the run-around about how the recall is expired. Justin intends to fight it and get his Tacoma fixed, because there is absolutely nothing wrong with the truck otherwise (FYI it passed emissions with flying colors). Well, there is one minor thing wrong with it...

The A/C doesn't work. Neither does the heat! When Just first told me that the A/C in his truck didn't work, I was like "Oh, is it blowing warm? You just need a charge. I recently had to get the A/C in my truck charged too."

Justin's like "No, it doesn't blow at all."

According to Justin, the A/C blew cold and the heat worked great, and then the system just ceased to blow any air whatsoever...

I ran into Justin and his girlfriend at a car show on July 9th, and the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of the 2007 Taco, and try the A/C for myself. The A/C will technically turn on, as in the orange lights on the "A/C" and "recirc" buttons will light up, and the compressor seems to engage as well. But, there is no air at all, not even a weak flow of air. Justin believes the blower motor is bad. When Justin described the symptoms to me, I believed that the actual HVAC control (the thing with the three dials and two buttons right below the radio) was bad. This was right after I'd successfully removed and reinstalled my own HVAC controls while attempting to diagnose why the A/C in my 2010 Taco was blowing cold on the driver's side but had suddenly started blowing warm on the passenger side (As stated above, it turns out my A/C was slightly low on R134a; It's been charged and now it's numbing fingers and hardening nipples on both sides once again!).

After testing the A/C in Justin's 2007 for myself, I agree with Justin that the controls are just fine, and the blower motor is in fact bad. It's worth noting that in 2011 or 2012 (Pretty sure it was 2011, because I brought the truck to the dealership by myself which means I had my driver's license by then; But it had to be before September 29, 2012, because that's when the 3-year/36K mile bumper-to-bumper warranty would have ended: It was somewhere between November 2011 and March 2012), my local dealership replaced my blower motor under warranty because while it did not completely fail, it was making this "ticking" noise that was nonexistent when I was using the A/C, but showed up when the heat was on and was especially noticeable when the fan was on "high."

I literally made an appointment, brought the truck to the dealership, went shopping at Kohl's with my parents, and while I was at Kohl's got a call within the hour that they were just going to replace the blower motor under warranty (The truck was barely over 2 years old at most at the time, and probably had no more than 20K miles on it). I got my truck back with a new blower motor within two hours or so of dropping it off.

I've taken apart various parts of my truck's dashboard to do everything from install a new head unit to replacing the cabin air filter (which is right on top of the blower motor). Justin is on a budget, and I was wondering if anybody knew how hard it would be for two guys to simply replace the part themselves?

First, I would check to see if the blower works on HI and not just low and medium settings. There's a resistor in-line that allows different speed selections and when it dies it keeps all but the HI setting from functioning. I would recommend checking that first. I had that issue and removed/cleaned mine and it works good as new again. More information at the link below.

If the entire unit has failed completely (unlikely but still possible) it shouldn't be very hard to replace. It's very accessible once you remove the glove box.

Try this first. Turn the fan on high, go over to the passengers side and look under the glove box. You will see a smooth round housing towards the center of the truck. With the fan on, hit it with the palm of your hand hard a few times and see if it fires up.

To answer your question you definitely can do it. Minimal mechanical skills required
