thats great your dad stayed with you. Something might have happened had he not been there. Life is full of degenerates. You were lucky you didnt become a victim of that.

Well, in the late 1990s, I was basically told by my parents to raise the alarm and tell them if anyone other than my doctor touched me in my "bathing suit area". Never happened, but that watch of Ron's; I believe it may have been an attempt to attract curious little boys.

Also, a good chunk of Oak Harbor's employment comes from the Navy base, and a good chunk of the population was military; In my neighborhood alone, you would see many cars in driveways with out-of-state plates. @wilcam47, being a veteran himself, probably knows how military families were not required to register their vehicles wherever they were living; When we lived in Oak Harbor from 2000-2002, all three of our vehicles (a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder, 2000 GMC Safari, and a 1999 Harley), were all registered in Virginia since that was where we'd lived last. My dad had one other motorcycle, a 1997 Yamaha, that may have been registered in California. My dad also held a New Jersey driver's license from 1982 to 2005, even though we never lived there during that time, because his dad and stepmom lived there and he was legally allowed to exempt himself from paying ANY income taxes at the state level since he was active duty military. Some states require family members of people in the military to get a license in that state, but every state exempts active duty military from getting a license in their state. I didn't get a driver's license until more than three and a half years after my dad retired, even though my dad remained in the Navy for more than two years after I turned 16, and I got a military dependent ID when I was 10; This meant I didn't need a state ID.

Washington was the only state we lived in that did not require my mom to get a driver's license in that state, and she had a valid Virginia license issued in 1998, so she just kept that license until we moved back to Virginia in 2002. My mom got her first license at age 16 in Connecticut in about 1975; Since then, she has had driver's licenses in California, Pennsylvania, California again, Virginia, and Pennsylvania again.

My dad was licensed in California from 1976 until the early 1980s, when his mom and stepdad relocated from California to Virginia. My dad was born in New Jersey in 1960 and lived there until 1975. In case you haven't figured it out, my biological grandparents divorced and both subsequently remarried. Biological grandpa (died from lung cancer in 2007) and "Nana" stayed in Jersey, and Nana still lives there.

Grammy and "Mr. P" (step grandpa) lived in a lot of different places from 1975 until the early 2000s, even after Mr. P retired. They lived in California, Virginia, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Florida, and even lived full-time at their lake house in Maine for a few years. There was one time from 2006 to about 2010 where they simultaneously owned two houses across the street from each other in Florida, two houses next door to each other in Maine, and their primary residence right here in Southeast PA!

Anyway, the point I am trying to make is there are a lot of military brats in Oak Harbor; The late Ron Asplund is lucky that he didn't sexually assault some veteran's kid, and end up getting shot with a high-powered rifle or killed in some other coldly tactical way, before the authorities got him!

 

Yup, we were stationen MD but i had texas plates and texas drivers license. Made it a little tricky buying firearms but not awful

There was an episode of the Sopranos where one of Tony's daughters friends was in a relationship with the soccer coach, and Tony and Sil were gonna whack him; One of Tony's non-mob friends talked him into letting the police handle it though, and he ended up getting arrested and facing charges.

Oak Harbor seems to be a breeding ground for perverts; Ron Asplund was convicted in 2012 and died in 2013, but I only found out about him yesterday. A while ago, a kid named Jon who I was actually friends with went to prison for raping his younger sisters and as far as I know is still there; I have no idea when this was as I have not been able to find anything about it. The most recent one before I found out about Ron Asplund was a kid named Sean Gaffney who I was actually in numerous sixth grade classes with and was one of the boys present on the Camp Moran trip (though he wasn't in the same cabin as Doug, Shane, and myself). Sean Gaffney did not molest any children to my knowledge, but he was picked up a year or two ago for possessing and distributing child porn. Last I heard, Sean was out on bail and the case was still pending, but I'd imagine that even after a plea agreement his life is pretty much over!

In the 2000-2001 Oak Harbor Middle School yearbook, there is a picture of us from probably February 2001 sitting next to each other playing bingo at some sort of school function. Sean was kind of a loner, and a bit socially awkward (then again, so was I), but he wasn't disliked by the other students and he certainly didn't come across as a pervert, though don't most of these assholes come across as sweet and innocent up until the moment they're caught?!?!

 

Yeah we had one guy that was a bully in school, found out a number of years ago he was a child molester. Not that theres correlation there. Many there that hadnt got caught or had light sentences. I heard many stories from LE people i know there.

Another guy in my class didnt finish high school 3 months from graduating. Ended up killing an ex girlfriend outside a bar. This is a small town under 1000 people. Last i heard he was in and out of jail.

 

The one guy who sexually assaulted his sisters, I'm pretty sure was a sociopath; Looking back on it, even when we were kids, there were a lot of warning signs.
