The engine is in great shape, and the head gasket has failed in such a way that more oil is being released into the coolant rather than the other way around; I am not getting a new engine. However, I did not budget for this big of a job and my dad is going to have to help me pay for it.

    Don't remind me...

Keep the original engine though? It would be fun to do a 4.0L swap, but that would require replacing the transmission and computer as well...

Yeah in a case like that it's less expensive to just get a different truck

Oof. That's why I mentioned it yesterday. You're showing signs of a small head gasket leak or head crack. If that's what it is, it will only get worse....to the point where engine failure would be imminent. I suspect it was comprised when it initially overheated and continued to worsen over the last couple of weeks.

When you shut the truck off at your friend's house there was immediate heat soak. That's why your gauge pegged when you started it.

Keep the driving to an absolute minimum. Eventually it will get bad enough to allow compression from the cylinders to pulse through the cooling system. Only bad things happen after that. Also, enough coolant in the oil can lead to all sorts of nasy things....spun crank bearings, scored cylinder walls, etc.

We are probably going to fix it, sell it, and buy a 3rd Gen...

The dark side awaits. I’ll send cookies as a 3rd gen initiation ritual.

My dad thinks it's more worthwhile to buy a newer vehicle; I can't afford a newer vehicle right now. I don't want anything but a truck. I refuse to replace my truck with a Shitsubishi Mirage.

What the fuck else is gonna break? It's gonna be a money pit. My uncle said I should just sell it and not mention the head gasket...

I am still confounded as to why a well-maintained 2TR-FE needs a major overhaul before 160K miles; I've always been OCD about maintenance.

It would only be right if you made the buyer aware of the issue if it's not been repaired.

I actually got pretty pissed at my uncle for saying that. My mechanic Petr did he'd pay like five grand for the truck as is, put a used low mileage engine in it, and resell it.

My plan is to pay to fix the truck, drive it for six months to a year, then sell it privately and buy a 3rd Gen with what I've saved up. My truck is worth enough that it will be a suitable down payment.
