Any head gasket leak is bad, but I would rather see oil in the coolant than the other way around.

My Heep blew the HG hard. I was blowing hoses due to the pressure from the cylinders.

Mine blew the heater bypass pipe when it initially overheated, but that's been replaced. My truck still runs smoothly and quietly.

I just could never do a Ridgeline, besides the looks, a friend of mine had one and said it felt strictly like an appliance and was if he was driving a fridge or stove around.

I'm going to see if I can talk Helen into letting me take it for a spin today. The looks are starting to grow on me, but what really matters to me is handing and how nimble it is in tight spaces. My Tacoma has a tight turning radius.

Would you be willing to part with the Crittermobile? Or perhaps, down the road, you would do me the honor of buying my truck and adding it to your collection?

Chris, I wish we lived closer together so we could replace my truck's head gasket. Another question that I have for you is how you milled the head...

Gonna play it by ear; I might not sell it, but I want someone to have it who I know is going to appreciate it and take care of it...

Any competent machine shop can mill a head it's really not that big of a deal. There's also the chance it may not even need milled. If it didn't get super hot and wasn't run for too long of a period of time it may not have warped which is the main reason to mill it.

For 5k I can almost drive to PA, tow it back to CO, remove head, send to machine shop, reinstall head, you fly out. I’m blown away at that cost man. Seriously get a second quote. It should be half that cost. Hell…even call a dealership.

I didn’t mill my head. I put a straight edge across the base and it was true. Now the head gasket that blew on my common rail Cummins motor was a different story. I has to take seven thousandth out of a thirteen allowable.

It could be worse, on a 2nd Gen 4.0.
If you mill the head, you have yo have custom head gaskets made. Else, you’ll throw timing codes.

    That’s a fact.

I had to use a marine HG on my Cummins since so much was milled off.

$4,700, and it includes a new timing chain and the head milled; I would prefer to have the head milled. The dealerships around here would probably charge as much to replace the head gasket as Pete would charge to replace the engine.

Have you called them and checked? You should get a quote.

I am DIY kind of guy, but sometimes the dealership offer decent deals. I never changed the timing belts on my 3.4L’s due to the deals they offered for belt and water pump replacement.

I called Thompson Toyota to get a quote. I’ll let you know what it costs.

I appreciate everyone looking out for me, but I've been going to Pete for a long time and I trust him greatly. He charged me like $300 parts and labor to install a Denso remanufactured alternator when Thompson Toyota wanted almost $600 for just the alternator...

There are a few people, including you Chris, would I would trust to take on this job. However, all of my qualified friends are busy and/or live out of state. Thompson Toyota once tried to charge me $1,700 for replacing the front brakes (calipers, pads, rotors) until a friend of mine gave the service department a piece of his mind and threatened to stop bringing his BMW for service at Thompson BMW unless they cut the price.

Pete charged me $450 for a complete front brake job (including bleeding the system) a few years later.

In most cases I would never suggest going to a dealership for major work. However, it never hurts to try. Sometimes I have been surprised.

    @ABA180

My friend Anna is my latest Zombie Huntress; I picked her up and drove back to Pete's this morning, since the property on which his garage is located offers a terrific backdrop; I had made plans with Anna to do this photo shoot prior to knowing the head gasket was shot, and both of us really wanted to do it, so I took my chances driving the truck...

Anna is on the autism spectrum like me, has sensory issues, and doesn't like wearing what she describes as "heavy-duty" masks. She was literally terrified of my old painting respirator and initially only agreed to wear it around her neck by the bottom straps...
