I want my friend's 2011 Corolla S 5-speed with only 51K miles, but he declined my offer of ten grand, which is basically what the car is worth...

I really don't want to do it myself; I can practically do car stereos blindfolded, and also replace headlights and taillights, but I refuse to take on a head gasket.

    That’s understandable. It’s a big job.

I'm just afraid that the dealer is going to find unseen damage and it will cost even more...

Me too. But what are you going do?
It is what it is. The damage is done.

This is one of those times where you prepare for the worst, that way everything else is “better” than expected.

    Hey Charlie.
How far is Hershey PA from you?

Do you ever watch Streetspeed717 on YouTube?
He’s having an open car show, I bet it would be lots of fun to go to it.

It is a fairly big job, but usually not too overly difficult. One issue that frequently can happen on older vehicles is having bolts or studs break taking the exhaust manifold off.

We used WD-40 on the ones that felt “tight”.
The Oxy/Acetylene torch was nicknamed “WD40”
Written right there on it with a Sharpie marker.

Sometimes the torch is the best option, lol! I usually start spraying PB Blaster every day for about a week before l even attempt to try to disassemble.

I will have to look at his video again.
I’d be willing to drive a bit if it wasn’t too far.
He seems like a really cool guy. It’s going to be more than just a show.

Yeah, well if the dealer find the damage after they've taken it all apart, then I can't exactly say "screw you" and drive it over to Pete's...

Exactly, and that’s where it gets expensive.
I mean, you “could” tell them to throw the parts in the bed and tow it to Pete.
But I’ve been on the receiving end of one of those deals. It sucks.
Nothing worse than trying to fix/repair what someone else started.

If I owned a shop, I would not accept those type jobs.

I have decided not to drove the truck until it goes in for repairs, unless we have to shuffle vehicles in the driveway.

Good idea, you dont want to chance the possibility of any extra issues.

Northeast cars are the worst for this. All the damn rust. I’d bet Charlie’s will have some issues from the years and years of salty roads.

You also gonna buy a gas station to accompany that thirsty girl? For that kind of money, I’d probably just go with a traditional rental.

As for your truck, I would be weary about handing your keys over to a Toyota dealer for such a repair. Basically writing a blank check for whatever they wanna do. I know you don’t wanna do this yourself - I would feel the exact same way - but I think if you round up some people from TW who are willing and able to assist, you should consider it. Or hand the keys off to Pete for the repair.
