My truck has the original transmission. What's the likelihood of that shitting the bed before 200K? I guarantee you that rebuilding or even just replacing it will be $3,000-$5,000...

How often have you been changing the fluid in it?

At the recommend intervals, though I can't remember the last time it was done. Pete checks the transmission fluid every oil change and it has been good; I might have him do it when I bring the truck in for new tires and the backup camera replacement in November. If I had unlimited funds, I would just buy a complete new drivetrain from Toyota and have Pete put it in...

Then the chances it will last over 200k are pretty good.

I'm hoping I've sold the 2010 and bought a certified preowned 3rd Gen before it hits 200K. Now that I've sworn off DoorDash for good, that should probably decrease my annual mileage by 2,000-5,000...

Chris, what do you think is the deal with the dealer? Trust or no?

It doesn’t sound like you trust them and the end result will cost you more money. Go with your gut.

I only trust them if the head isn't warped; I wish there was some way to know this for sure.

    Straight edge.

If I had the head off an engine that I planned on keeping long term, it would be going to a machine shop anyway for a freshen up.

Talk to the dealership and find out all the what ifs, then make ur decision. I still think 5k is high for a head gasket job. They may have a rebuilt head sitting there ready to swap in. When we did my sons ranger we got 2 rebuilt heads off of a company in Georgia. Easy peasy.

You're going to be hard pressed to get any dealership to put a defined price for any repair in writing and being willing to stick to it to the penny. It's not even a matter of honesty or lack thereof. It's the unforeseeable stuff. Until that head comes off they can't tell if it's warped. Warped head means either machine shop time or a new head. What if a head bolt breaks during teardown? Or an exhaust stud? There are variables beyond their control.

To be fair, ask for a budgetary quote with a "not to exceed" number in writing. They should be willing to do something like that. Where I work we rebuild hydraulic cylinders. The really big kind off large cranes and we do this all the time. We're constantly getting calls asking for "sight unseen " quotes and that's just not possible. Imagine calling a body shop and asking for an estimate on having your car fixed after hitting a deer. "It just needs a left fender and a headlight." Well first off did you hit it with a Ford or a Ferrari? Going to make a difference!

I mean before tearing apart the engine, in terms of symptoms the truck could be giving...

"...with all this technology and information at our fingertips."

That has turned a giant segment of the population into relentlessly jabbering imbeciles who can't solve a problem or make a decision minor as what to have for lunch without a group consensus and then commentary about it.

Society has gone to seed.

“I seen a guy do it on YouTube.”

When I hear that, That’s about the time I start to find away out of that conversation.

In a way I have some admiration for the YouTube achievers, only some however.

Many folks now "do things" without learning - step 1, step 2, step 3 - without actually learning what they are doing and why. If you take away the media they are again helpless.

Sure it is great that they accomplished whatever they wanted to do but there is a difference between doing something and learning something, unfortunately it seems that working to learn something has drifted out of style in the last 20 years or so.

    @BkerChuck

So I just talked to a guy at a cars and coffee who works for Toyota, has done work on Tacomas, and recently rebuilt the engine in his 2003 MR2 Spyder.

He believes, based on the symptoms that described, that the head is warped. This can fixed, but this isn't a newer engine with lower miles. What else could go wrong.

Pete will put in a used engine with relatively low miles on it for just over $7K. If I have the current engine repaired, something else could go wrong that ends up bringing the cost past that of a new engine. I would give the original engine to my friend Gwyn's son to tear down and rebuild in his spare time.

Yeah, what gets me is when the person thinks it’s as easy as it looks on YouTube.
And your price should coincide with “how easy it looked”.

Plenty, but I'm gonna take a nap first; I'm surprised that more people haven't reacted to my decision to more than likely replace the engine...
