If it wasn't overheated too bad, then hopefully the head is still true.

I thought that was your plan, no use dumping a ton of cash into the current one because there would be no return on investment.

And Pete is still getting work even if he doesn't do the engine job. After Halloween, he is putting new tires on the truck, replacing the backup camera, and possibly flushing the transmission fluid.

Not in today's market; I'll probably be in a newer truck before November 2024.

    @shakerhood

I am really liking the idea of a 2023 Access Cab SR V6 4x4 in Barcelona Red; I don't need anything fancy, and the only thing I'd really need to do to the truck is add foglights and a better stereo system...

You may trust this guy....and that's great. But he's not doing you in favors as far as cost.

4x4 is a heck of a nice upgrade, you can always change the stereo and foglights.

What do you think is the likelihood of the head being warped?

I think the engine has overheated twice. I'm not an expert. But I would say 50/50.

Putting $5k-$7500 in a vehicle that's worth less than $10k doesn't necessarily seem like a wise decision. But I also understand if you aren't in a position to buy another vehicle.

Think of it as money to keep you on the road. Not money you will recoup later....because you won't

Also, my truck first "overheated" back in June 2022, but that was when I overfilled it and the pressure caused the coolant reservoir cap to pop open; I mistook this for being related to the coolant being overfilled. When I say overheated, I mean that the temperature gauge shot up to just outside the red zone and immediately went back down.

I am 99% sure that the thermostat was in the early stages of failure, but it only did it a couple of times; I drove the truck to upstate New York and back in July 2022 with absolutely no issues.

You can't overfill the cooling system

I plan on buying a newer truck before the end of 2024 at the latest. Thompson Toyota has the exact same truck as mine, but white with a manual transmission and about 54K fewer miles (so 123K and change), on the lot for $12K; I was told that if my truck didn't have the head gasket issue, it would probably be on the lot for about the same. I realize that I am going to lose money, and the only reason I'm not selling the truck as-is, is because it has a new frame and numerous other components that I didn't have to pay for.

What could have caused the cap to pop open then? The cap was open and there was coolant all over the engine and underside of the hood, after I topped off the coolant...

54k is a LOT less mileage. Also, remember your truck as been in a couple of accidents. These things will greatly effect the value.

As for the price of the other truck? That's not what it will sell for, more than likey

Even a 2010 Toyota Tacoma 5-speed with relatively low miles for its age in this used vehicle market? What's really fucking obnoxious is that with the exception of one, the accidents weren't my fault; I got rear-ended by a texting driver in March 2015, sideswiped by a drunk driver in October 2015, and then the pipe incident in February 2022.

No, the little plastic cap on top of the reservoir tank; I never had any issues with the radiator cap, though it was cheap to replace so I did just that...

    Still obnoxious...

    :annoyed:

I honestly have no idea how the pipe incident ended up on my truck's Carfax, since it occurred on private property and the police were not called; I always thought the police report is what caused accidents to get reported to Carfax, unless simply reporting any accident to insurance is what does it...?
