My cousin and her husband bought a brand new duplex townhouse in the Wilkes-Barre, PA area in September or October of 2018; 2-story house of like 1,500-1,600 square feet with 3 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, 1 half bathroom, central A/C, gas heat, and granite countertops in the kitchen. They paid like $205K for the house and put 20% down. They have since refinanced and their mortgage payment is only slightly more than my friend's rent on the 1-bedroom apartment back in 2013. Keep in mind that my friend's old apartment is in the overpriced Philly suburbs, and my cousin's house is almost 100 miles up North and in a rather isolated area, but still...

My mom and I are on good terms, and she sympathizes with my reasoning for not masking up, but she's frustrated that I absolutely refuse to wear a mask anywhere but in the waiting room at my therapist.

If I have my way, I will be living with my parents until I can put a down payment on suitable first place.

My cousin's apartment in Wilkes-Barre was beautiful. It only had one bedroom, but it had a huge kitchen with a dishwasher, gas stove, gas heat, central air, washer/dryer, and even vaulted ceilings. The building was built in the late 1980s or early 1990s, it had the original HVAC system, and the 30-year old Comfortmaker central A/C shit the bed in the middle of a heat wave. The landlord had the A/C and furnace replaced within 48 hours!

Needless to say, my cousin and her husband loved that apartment, but felt it was overpriced for the area at about $1,200 per month.

This was probably my proudest achievement as the registered owner of a pickup truck...

My cousin and her husband closed on the new house in October 2018 and were living there by the time I came to visit for the first time. However, they still had a lot of stuff to move out of the apartment; I proposed that we drive the Tacoma to the apartment and cram as much into the bed as we possibly could. That's exactly what we did!

I guess it depends where you live too, around here that would be insanely expensive.

My cousin's mortgage payment on a 4-year old, 3-bedroom duplex townhouse with central A/C and granite countertops is less than $1,000 per month, though they didn't escrow it...

My first home purchase was in 2000. I remember that mortgage as ~1350 ish? We (old gf) and I put a bunch down for that. I was pretty stoked at the time, 3 bedroom, 2 car garage, back yard, we got a dog. It's been rough since then with rising prices. Just moved this year and I'm taking it on the nose now but at least I have rental income to mostly offset that pain.

I was looking at this one the other night, contemplating a life I might have if I were without family:

    https://www.zillow.com/homes/19412-View-Dr-West-Linn,-OR-97068_rb/48238732_zpid/?

It's fun to contemplate what-if. A bridge over the stream and have the shop on one side and the residence on the other? Lots of property to work with and it looks reasonably flat (should be in that area). I may run past it today just to dream. Don't have any spare cash or time for big projects like that though.

@shakerhood already lives in Ohio, and it really depends on which part of Ohio you live in; I haven't been to Cincinnati since June or July of 2000. My dad was transferred from NAS Norfolk to NAS Whidbey Island. We had gone up to Maine for a family reunion at my grandma's lakehouse and then drove across the country to Washington. We stopped at the home of my dad's Navy buddy and his family in the Cincinnati suburbs to spend the night and go to a Reds game. I was only 11 years old at the time, and the only places we spent any time were the aforementioned Navy buddy's house and at the baseball stadium, but I thought it was pretty nice...
