Statistics show that in many parts of Pennsylvania, heroin is easier to obtain than beer!

    This happened back in 2012...

I have a friend who got pulled over based purely on the fact that she was driving a 20-year old $500 beater (1992 Saturn SL; Again, this took place in 2012 or 2013, right before she turned 21) at night during prime drunk driving hours, and then got arrested for DUI because she was 20 years old blew a .02 BAC. She lost her license for six months and had to pay fines various costs amounting to like $10,000!

I guarantee you there were a few times when I was younger, and I drove home with a BAC of .05 to .07. But, the legal limit is .08, so I was not driving under the influence! And I was between the ages of 24 to 27...

I have also been the victim of a drunk driver before, but it was a 70-year old scumbag recidivist old man, not some dumb kid...

If you kill or injure somebody, or do major damage to someone else's property, while driving drunk... Then you should have the book thrown at you. However, if you're just some dumb kid who had a couple beers, then the law is too damn broad.

I have large number of friends who lost their licenses between the ages of 16 and 20 years old for simply being a minor in possession. Hell, a few of them were not even in possession at the time they were caught. They either showed signs of being a bit buzzed, or a subsequent test showed that they had a BAC of .01 or more.

One of my coworkers managed to get his driver's license suspended for five years because he racked up so many underage drinking charges in college, and not one of them involved actually driving! At the least the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania showed some compassion and issued him a restricted (for school, work, and emergencies only) license. Sometimes I think that my home state should be called the Commiewealth or Uncommonwealth, not the Commonwealth, of Pennsylvania.

I didn't have much of a social life between the ages of 16 and 19, but once I made a bunch of friends through the Coffeehouse shortly before my 20th birthday, you bet your ass I cracked a cold one with my new friends from time to time. I did not get seriously drunk for the first time until 2015 or so, though...

Also, what the hell were the cops gonna do if they caught me? Suspend my state ID card? The joke's on them, because I didn't have a goddamn license until 2 months after I turned 22!

The point I'm trying to make here is that I am in no way condoning drunk driving. I think that drunk driving is a fucking stupid thing to do, and I always use Uber. However, I do think that alcohol-related offenses, like all relatively minor offenses, should be taken on a case-by-case basis.

Pennsylvania did do one thing right though with regards to DUIs. If you are 21 or older, it's your first offense, and you are below a certain BAC, then you don't lose your driver's license. You still get arrested, have to pay a substantial fine, and take expensive accelerated rehab classes, but your license will not be suspended.

Even with regards to DUIs, I've learned that police officers can sometimes have a lot of discretion. For example, I was chatting with this woman at the bar where I work. She attempted to drive home from a bar after way too many drinks one time, and a cop stopped her right as she was about drive away. She was literally about to be arrested for DUI when another driver, even drunker than her, slammed into her parked car. The cop said "He just got your DUI," and she got an Uber home while the guy who crashed into her car subsequently failed a field sobriety test and got a DUI...

One thing I definitely do not miss about being a kid is having to go everywhere with my parents because I was too young to stay home alone.

This was especially common during the holidays...

The last time I had a babysitter was in about December 2000, which would have made me 11 years old. My parents have allowed me to stay home alone since I was about 12, and they've been letting stay at home for day without any adults present since I was like 17 or 18.

In the late 1990s, however, I had to go with my parents to the mall when they went shopping. The only reason I didn't put up a fight is because I looked forward to the toy store, and the Radio Shack. Does anybody remember that back in the day, Radio Shack actually had R/C vehicles on the floor that you could actually play with?!?!

However, times changed. I got older and outgrew the toys that had once brought me so much joy. That, and maybe the offerings at Radio Shack just became less impressive...

Needless to say, one thing I very quickly learned upon getting mum driver's license was to always take a separate vehicle when I had to go shopping with my parents. They have a tendency to drag things out and spend goes shopping, when I tend to grow tired of it after an hour or so...

Another thing I learned was to never go shopping with a group of women when you're the only guy!

Pennsylvania law prohibits car dealerships from doing business on Sundays, so I decided to explore my local Toyota dealership on my way home from work...

I found 11 new frames (I'm presuming 2nd Gen Taco) while cruising the used car lot!

We have a green 2009 DCSB TRD 4x4 with less than 80K miles and a black 2012 DCSB TRD 4x4 with almost 100K miles, right next to each other at Thompson Toyota...

    image.jpg image.jpg

First, the black 2012. This one has almost 100K miles, and it is being sold AS-IS/NO WARRANTY. It appears to be in decent enough condition, but the lack of a warranty makes me wonder...

    image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg

And then here's the green 2009, which only had like 78k miles and DID have a warranty...
