I saw this 1953 Ford wagon parked outside a burger place yesterday...

I have no idea why the emblems say "Country Sedan" when it's clearly a wagon...

 

That headliner is badass

 

I actually like it.
And I’d drive it too.

Wonder if the seats fold up/down.
Would make a great over night fishing/camping rig.

I was surprised to see that this wagon had an automatic transmission; I feel like automatic transmissions were about as common in 1953 as manual transmissions are in 2024...

Yesterday, the neighborhood beggar showed up while I was parked in @Gwyns04's front yard and loading scrap into the truck, and of course she asked me for money. Of course, I had a shit-ton of cash on me from scrapping the appliances from the apartment building...

I've told everybody about the neighborhood beggar. Well, I may have said before, she lives in the neighborhood. It is not entirely clear whether she lives with a caretaker, or if she lives in a group home with other people who have mental issues. Gwyn found out that the reason she asks for money is that she has a filthy habit, and while the agency that cares for her pays for food, it won't pay for tobacco products.

She has had the cops called on her numerous times from what I've heard, and the township knows about it her, but there is very little either the township or the local police can do. It is illegal to solicit/peddle without a permit in the township, and they have told people to simply threaten to call the cops if she asks them for money. Gwyn has allegedly tried this tactic with her, and it's apparently worked; I am afraid to go this route because I don't want a confrontation.

Today, I had an ulterior motive for bringing Porter over to Gwyn's with me. This woman is afraid of dogs; Porter is a total scaredy cat who will growl at strangers, but is an ultimately harmless dog whose bark is worse than his bite. Gwyn has a Bulldog named Ozzy and an elderly mutt named Utley who are both very friendly. I kept all three dogs in the yard with me while I dismantled the air-conditioners, so I could work in peace.

This same woman ran out into the middle of the road on New Year's Day to flag me down, presumably to ask for a ride. This is woman is known to have issues with continence, and the very first time I saw her, she'd wet herself. I will not let her in my truck based on that fact alone!

I'm also pretty sure that they're ordinances prohibiting the establishment of a group home in a residential neighborhood; I don't particularly care about the group being there, but this is starting to get annoying. If this woman doesn't ask for money, she will just stand there and stare at you, or pace in front of your house like she did yesterday.

 

Just tell her you have money, but don’t want to give it to her.
If you give her your money, then you won’t have any money.
That works for me………sometimes.

Depending on the situation, my mood, and whether or not I’ll likely ever see them again.
I might or might not give them money.

Basically, if I’m in a good mood and I don’t think I’ll see you again, or that you will ask for money again. I’ll probably give you a few bucks.

If I think I’ll see you again, and that you’ll ask for money again. The chances are low that I’ll help you out.

If I’m not in a good mood, 99.99% chance you aren’t getting anything.
And that’s usually when I tell you (them) “I have money, but none I want to give you”.

I think I told the story once, about the guy that called my bluff?
I told him I didn’t have any money. Then he asked me if I actually had money, but just didn’t want to give it to. To which, I had to admit it. I just didn’t want to give him my money.

Yeah, I just go ahead and tell them. I got money. But none I can give.
Followed by, “if I give you mine, then I won’t have any.”

 

I expect encounters like these in Philly, but it's bullshit that I have to deal with this in a residential neighborhood; I'm sorry.

I'm also seeing more people holding signs outside of shopping centers in Doylestown and Warrington, and it seems like it's a lot more common now than it was a few years ago.

Remember last December when the Bethlehem cop gave me grief for parking in a fire zone? A homeless woman had been admiring my truck and complimented me on the Christmas lights before I went in to pick up the order. @Stitchgirl90 told me that while I was inside the wing place, the cop initially honked his horn because he apparently thought there was a driver in the truck (only succeeded in scaring the shit out of my girlfriend); Amanda also told me that the homeless woman grabbed her shopping cart and took off like a bat out of hell as soon as that cop honked and made his presence know. I think that the cop was also a bit annoyed that my girlfriend was conversing with a known homeless person who had probably given him trouble before.

 

Disagree

You can never understand the motives and decisions of such a character. Don’t recommend anything that could resemble taunting.

Correct way to handle it is to say:
“No”
“No, please leave this property”
“Please the leave the property or I will call the cops” - then follow through and call the cops if issue persists

Don’t put anymore thought into it

 

I've been told she has come onto other peoples' property, but she stayed in the street while talking to me. There are no sidewalks in the neighborhood, but rather designated walking areas marked by painted white lines...

 

Yeah, but this is an on going thing with Charlie.
Evidently just saying "No" doesn't work.
Neither does calling the police.

To be honest, If this is as big of a deal as Charlie makes it.
I'd probably told her, "I don't have an money. And leave me the the f'ck alone".
Nice hasn't worked, might as well try being "mean".

Or keep being "nice" about it, and dealing with this weekly, bi-weekly, monthly.........
Something has to change. Cause what ever Charlie / "they" are doing, isn't working.

But I really don't think it's as big as deal as it being made out to be.

We had a guy that sat at the exit ramp 2-3 days a week one summer.
If your window was down, he was asking. It never bothered me.
I gave him money once.
After that, I stopped at the stop, and drove off.

Eventually, he just stopped walking towards my truck.

Again, I wasn't "bothered" by it. He can panhandle all he wants.
Beats stealing I suppose?

 

BTW, we can disagree and still be internet friends.
