I'd throw a transmission in it. Much cheaper than a new(er) truck.
I don't know how some people are surviving. I've cut way back on stuff.
Groceries are outrageous. I've resorted to off brand bottle water. No more cokes and tea for me.
I hit the deli and buy the stuff "almost" out of date on a discount.

Do you have access to some basic mechanics hand tools? You seem like a pretty smart guy and with the help of those tools and a haynes manual you likely could have paid for most of the tools that you would have used to do the stuff you paid to have done.

I understand DIY wrenching is not for everyone, for all I know your job just may not allow you the time to do that stuff. I'm just trying to give some hopefully helpful thoughts.

I wouldn't suggest a new guy start with an automatic transmission.
Plus, there is no warranty on a DIY job.

I have never done anything more involved than replaced headlights, taillights, and stereo components myself. Even if I was comfortable taking on a job of this magnitude, I do not have the time or the space for it.

Sorry to hear that, but I understand the predicament. Also sorry for it coming off that I suggest this be your first DIY job....I'd say something like a set of brake pads would be a good one to start. Not very many tools needed, and if you do one side at a time, you have the other side to reference as something of a guide.

Either way let us know how the newer transmission goes! I truly hope it solve the issue

Originally a thread called How many people have manual-swapped a 2nd Gen?

For those of you just tuning in, the oil pump in my automatic transmission is shitting the bed. My mechanic has found me a replacement transmission with 62K miles on it, for about two grand installed.

Going to three pedals has been a fantasy of mine ever since my uncle taught to drive stick almost ten years ago (my parents bought my truck for me as a present when I got my learners permit and I did not know how to drive stick at the time). My mechanic talked me out of doing a manual swap, but I would still like to know if any 2nd Gen owners have successfully done this.

My biggest concern would be that manual 2nd Gens have a pull-and-turn parking brake located to the lower right of the steering column, while automatic 2nd Gens have a push-to-release foot pedal. All 1st Gens had the classic pull-and-turn, even the automatics. I’m thinking Toyota did it this way on purpose, maybe because there wasn’t enough room for a clutch and a parking brake pedal?

I also have OEM-style aftermarket cruise control, and I’ve been told that another wire is required for the clutch start/cancel button…?

I would really love to have a stick shift truck, but with my present budget and time constraints, it just wouldn’t be a good idea… :(

    It’s nice to dream though!

Also, this is the truck my Uncle Jeff taught me to drive stick in…

If my truck makes it to 203k, Cher will not be on the radio.
Never cared for any of her music. But we all like what we like, blast what you like.:fistbump:

It was “If I could turn back time”, which is probably the only song of hers that I like…

The only thing I ever liked her in was some kind of comedy show she did with her husband Sonny back in the early 70's, remember watching it as a child.

To be fair, I was listening to mgk when I read your post.
A lot of people don't like him. I like probably 50% of his stuff.

Pretty sure Youtube recommended his new song to me since I had been listening to Zack Bryan recently.
mgk just did a cover of "Sun to Me".
