That's just it, reality try getting someone to work for that amount. My supermarket job I had in college when it was $5 an hour required was paying that. They were forced to raise it to $7 because they couldn't get or keep people.

Depends on how far from surrounding states one is would also drive that, if I could make a lot more by driving to another state that wasn't too far away I'd be a fool not to.

I think minimum wage was $2.75 per hour when I started as a teenager at the mall.

I mean there just different refrigerants. R134a is or was used in commercial stuff, just not residential much and I'd guess it has everything to do with operating pressures and performance data. No idea on exactly why though.

    I'll add a link:

    PLEASE READ ENTIRE POST!!!

The events of the coming week will determine whether or not I raise holy hell at work…

As everybody knows, one of the two part-time dishwasher/utility workers was fired two weeks ago because among other things, he was unreliable and showed up when he felt like it. None of my colleagues liked him very much.

This royally screwed me over last weekend because there wasn’t a morning guy whose shift overlapped with mine, and I was forced to take on the whole shift myself.

My first weekend at the nursing home, they had me working back-to-back 12-hour shifts, and I had a meltdown. In addition to the required 1-hour break for everybody working a double shift, they were having to give me nearly an additional hour of “break” time so I could leave to pick up Amanda. I started at 7am those two days, and Amanda didn’t start until 11am; I would clock out at 10am-10:30am, go get Amanda, come to work, and clock back in.

I suspect that they also realized that they didn’t have the budget to pay me the required overtime for four 12-hour shifts a month, and by the time I got my second schedule, I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was back to my normal 12-8pm shift.

So, they hired a new part-time guy recently, and he was supposed to start today. However, my boss informed me yesterday that this will likely not be the case because he hasn’t finished his paperwork.

    Okay, whatever…

I am pretty sure that he (or she) will be ready to work within the week. If he is not, and I am faced with the prospect of doing two back-to-back weekend shifts, I am going to flat out refuse.

What really throws me off is the lack of an overlap. I’ve been here for about two and a half months, and in for all but a few days, there’s been a guy working the 7am-3pm shift; I come in at 12pm and there’s an overlap where we help each other out, and then I take on the evening shift by myself after my break. My break is anywhere between 2:30pm and 3:30pm, and lasts 30 minutes.

Sometimes, I get really lucky, and the part-time guy is scheduled from 4pm-8pm.

I don’t give a shit what anybody says; I am not experienced enough of fast enough to take on an entire day of dishwashing on my own. My shift is supposed to be 12pm-8pm, and when I’m solo from 3pm-8pm, I generally get done between 8pm and 8:30pm.

The day the old part-time guy got fired, I was there until 9:15pm, and I only got out before 10pm because Amanda and one of the managers were helping me. Last Sunday, I also didn’t finish until 9:15. Yesterday, I finished at 8:30pm because the other full-time guy was working 7am-3pm and there were no leftover pots.

I am really lucky because they are desperate to keep me, to keep the load off of the other full-time guy, and I have a lot of bargaining power.

I have most of the days off that I want off through the end of November; Amanda and I took off on November 5th (Election Day) because we are volunteering at the polls. I

I have some savings between my 401(k) at NAVMAR, my 401(k) at my current job, and a CD that I have; I obviously can’t touch any of these right now. Because of this my dad paid a little over $2,400 for my truck’s transmission replacement, and I am paying him back; I have only $500 left! I also owe him a little bit of money for some other stuff he helped me out with, and this will be paid off by late October.

I love the people I work for, and most of the people I work with, but unpredictability is the biggest problem I have with this job. An amazing number of people have quit since Amanda started working here last spring, and at least two have been fired since I started working here.

People routinely decide to call out at a moment’s notice, and it throws the whole team into disarray because we are understaffed; I have never experienced disloyalty and/or turnover at any other place I’ve worked, even detailing cars at Fred Beans!

I plan on keeping this job through the holiday season, but I am going to start actively looking for a new one after Election Day. All my debts will be paid off by then, and I won’t be so dependent on a full-time income; I really do not want to work full-time unless it’s my dream job!

I’ve mentioned it before, but here it is again…

This is my first true full-time job!

I started working at Puck in late 2014, I starting running errands for a friend who owned a steak and hoagie place down the hill from Puck in the spring of 2015, and I delivered pizzas for a pizzeria from July 2015 to November 2015.

I started detailing cars at Fred Beans in September 2018 and was ready to quit before the end of the year, but then in October 2018, Sam told me that Puck would be closing indefinitely in January 2019 to structural issues with the building; I started doing Uber Eats in December 2018 and stuck it out at Fred Beans until June 2019.

I found DoorDash preferable to Uber Eats and sustained myself financially solely on DoorDash from July 2019 to September 2019, when I got a part-time job at my dad’s company. Not including a 3-month furlough from March 2020 to June 2020 due to COVID, I worked at NAVMAR for about four years until I was laid off in October 2023. I did DoorDash on the side even after starting work at NAVMAR, but stopped for nearly a year due to COVID; I started up again in January 2021, and did both DoorDash and Uber Eats sporadically until the spring of 2024. From the summer of 2015 through September 2019, I worked enough part-time jobs and off-the-books odd jobs that my income was most certainly equivalent to many people with one full-time job. I earned the most annually from probably July 2015 through January 2021.

Do the best you can within the time you are scheduled.
    Pay should be performance based.
If others calling out makes you work 30% more (faster, harder....what ever). You should be paid based on the work done.
That said, I have no idea what work was "to be expected" when you hired on?
Are you performing as expected for the job duties? Under performing? Over performing?

Either you or the company one, will have to make a choice.

You can ask for more pay, work "less", or quit.
They can pay more, pay the same, or fire you.

The pay is not the issue; I’m satisfied with the pay. When I don’t have an overlapping shift with the guy working the 7am-3pm shift, I most definitely underperform.

I do not believe I will be fired, because they like me and have been bending over backwards to accommodate me ever since I strongly hinted that I would quit if I had to work 12-hour shifts on a regular basis.

I also know that I mentioned the epic failure and waste of time that was my attempt to land a job at Home Depot through Ken’s Krew, but here it is again and a bit more in-depth…

I have absolutely no grievances with Home Depot, and in fact I am considering applying for a full-time job there; Home Depot is an awesome place to work! :)

I don’t even necessarily have any grievances with Ken’s Krew, but I feel like I was misled on the demographic it was geared towards (ditto my parents), and that I wasted more than six months on a wild goose chase.

I suspected from the very beginning that it was geared for much lower functioning individuals than myself, but my parents and I were both given the impression that Ken’s Krew would train me and give me valuable skills, then ultimately assimilate me into a full-time position at Home Depot.

I had to apply for OVR, which I got approved for, but then the job coach who was handling my case with Ken’s Krew abruptly left his job and set me back months. This whole debacle started in November 2023, before Thanksgiving, and I was supposed to be ready to go in January of 2024. It was probably May or June 2024 before I finally got my assessment/interview, and I found two weeks later that Ken’s Krew had declined my application.

The robo-letter I received via email can be described as insulting, basically saying that Ken’s Krew could not help me, and that I should find a more specialized service provider.

I spent more than six months collecting unemployment and scrapping HVAC equipment to scrape by, hoping I would end up with this good job at Home Depot, but it ended up being a farce.

Among the things I got dinged for at my assessment was talking to much; I also used the saying “pay-to-bullshit ratio” in a conversation with the job coach after my assessment. There is an insane amount of profanity coming out of the kitchen where I work on an hourly basis, so this is particularly infuriating.

I talk too much. But not when I work.
When I work, I am a "get the job done" type guy.
I actually find small talk during working is irritating.
I don't even like to listen to music when I work.

But I am 100% bad to talk WAY too much off work.
There is no "In and out" of any place with me. I always wind up talking to someone.

So, my “talking too much” amounted to trying to be friendly with coworkers and customers alike…

You may remember that I struck up a conversation with a mortician a couple weeks ago when he came to pick up a recently deceased resident in a 30-year minivan. My boss saw me out the window talking with the guy, and taking pics of the van, and didn’t care.
