So, I went to the Toyota dealer to pick up a cabin air filter, and took the opportunity to chat with the parts manager...

Turns out Rock Auto sells factory-spec Tacoma brake calipers in red at a very good price. I've got about 50% life left on my brakes, and the Toyota dealer will install them for me as part of my next brake job!

Well the brake job would include calipers, pads, and rotors. I really want red calipers.

    My truck's brake history...

My truck has the original rear brakes (drum, of course) and as of spring 2017, my rear brakes had like 70% life on them.

I probably should have gotten 40K to 50K out of my front brakes, but they started to show signs of significant wear at about 31K. The pads were replaced and the rotors were turned in October 2013 I believe. Keep in mind that my dad bought my present '10 RC within a month of me getting my learner's permit. I pretty much learned to drive in my truck, even taking the DMV road test in it. I was very "herky-jerky" with the brake pedal, as most new drivers are. Even after I became more graceful with my braking, stop-and-go traffic was (and still is) a part of my truck's everyday life. That's how the first set of pads and rotors wore out so quickly...

In early 2015 I believe, the brakes started squeaking and creaking excessively. I didn't drive as much then as I do now, so I only needed to get the oil changed twice a year. The owner's manual recommends every 5K miles or 6 months, whichever comes first.

In 2014, 2015, and 2016, these both occurred at the same time. I always got the oil changed at the dealership in April or May, and at my dad's independent mechanic in October, which happens to be when my truck's inspection it due...

The dealership checked my front brakes in the spring of '15 and said they were fine with plenty of life left. The squeaking and groaning continued, and was especially bad if the truck had been sitting (ever for just a few hours or overnight).

My dad's mechanic checked the brakes in October 2015 when my truck went in for its second oil change of the year. My truck not only passed the safety inspection, but my mechanic said the brakes had plenty of life left.

At the end of October 2015, as you know, I got hit by a drunk driver. My body guy is also a mechanic, so I had him replace the pads and rotors. The brakes still squeak in reverse (which I'm told is normal), and when the truck has been sitting for several days, but replacing the pads and calipers in December 2015 did the job...

What do you mean WTF? I'm not blowing $120 on caliper covers. I just getting red calipers. It will just be the cost of a brake job...

Well my calipers need to be replaced soon anyway because of salt exposure, so I'm gonna replace them.

Calipers don't need to be replaced that often....if ever

Just paint them using caliper paint
