Here's a story about one of the many bizarre things you may face working as a barback...

I believe this was sometime in the summer of 2017. All I know is that it was after Memorial Day, because the patio was permanently open. During the summer, part of my normal routine is to set up the outdoor bar. This includes turning on all the lights, taking inventory of any burned out lights, turning on the TVs, and filling up the ice bins...

One of the most annoying that I deal with during the warm season is customers who seem oblivious to the fact that we are closed and seem to get pissed off at the barback or bartender setting up, just for being the bearer of bad news...

Best case scenario, they will stand outside the fence and shout across the patio "Are you guys open?!?!" Yeah, the liquor cabinets are locked up, the beer fridge is locked up, most if not all of the lights are not on, I'm the only one behind the bar, and there are no other customers present...

Yeah, we're open, dumbass. Come on in!

But, you gotta just smile and tell them you actually do open. Most of the time they say "okay" and walk away. Sometimes, as mentioned above, they will get pissed and can't seem to comprehend why you aren't open right then when they are craving a burger and a cold beer. All you can do is politely explain, and they leave...

Then, you've got the oblivious individuals who actually open the gate and come inside the patio area, all ready to order a drink. Again, once you explain to them that you just a barback and you don't open until 4pm, they leave without incident...

    Here's the weird part...

Going back to this incident in summer 2017...

I was outside readying the patio for the late afternoon crowd when I see this older man who clearly has some sort of intellectual disability (who I'd seen before) walking past the front gate. Moments later, I hear a very plastic sound, and remember that the cigarette receptacle (see picture) is sitting just outside the main entrance...

I run over to the fence, look around the corner, and sure enough, the old man is trying to open the goddamn cigarette receptacle!

I'm like "Dude, you don't want to go in there!"

The old man puts the thing down and starts walking over to me, talking unintelligibly (he had some bizarre tumor or growth on his face that his lower face/chin look huge). The gate was open and he attempted to follow me back inside the fenced-in patio area. I shut gate, and put the rubber bike lock in place, and he said "you locked me out" or something like that...

I just turned out and walked away, and he eventually disappeared...

I texted another coworker (a bartender), and he knew exactly who I was talking about. Apparently, this weirdo had been caught trying to steal cigarette butts out of the receptacle and attempting to smoke them, on at least two other occasions...

I've seen him a couple times since then, but he hasn't tried to steal from the cigarette receptacles while I'm on the clock. He seems to be most active in the summer, as I haven't seen him since September...

Where the hell do these people come from?!?!

    Honestly, I think I know...

There are quite a few nursing homes, group homes, and Section 8 apartment complexes within easy walking distance of Doylestown Borough...

My boss, as a person, summed up in one post...

My boss is a petite 5'3" Asian-American woman. At a solid 6 feet and nearly 250 pounds, I TOWER over her. To give you an idea of how much bigger I am than her, I once let her drive my Tacoma, and she had to pull the seat so far forward that my knees were touching the dashboard!

Also, physically picking up my boss is like carrying a few bags of groceries (which, much to her chagrin, I have actually done before; She forgave me for that one)

My boss is physically much smaller than me, but she's my hero, and after all she's done for me, I see her as being larger than life!

I flip out when people touch my truck, but my love and trust for my boss is so strong that I let her drive it, on a rainy day no less!

FYI, I have mellowed a lot in the last year or so. In 2016, some people may remember that I gave a 19-year old coworker driving lessons in my beloved Tacoma when she got her learner's permit...

I've already promised my former high school teacher that I will give her daughter, who is about to turn 16, driving lessons in my truck!

    God help me...

One time I met a woman in her late 30s at my bar when I was there as a customer. She was very short and very good looking. With her good sport of a husband present, she told that she was so light that if I were to bang her, I could spin her around on my dick during sex...

There's a picture floating around somewhere (taken by the husband) of me holding her up like a baby (except she was a 5-foot tall 30-something MILF)

She was hot! Really hot! I have a shirt from a brewery that says "I'd Tap That." If she'd been single and not married, truer words would have never been spoken!

I prefer girls who are like 5'2" to 5'6". I just thought that particularly short woman was hot!

You won't be considered pedo. How old is this 4'8" girl?

One of my biggest gripes about the base model third gen is strictly aesthetic in nature...

The trucks seen here are a 3rd Gen AC SR and an '08 DCSB that I found on the street, and my own '10 RC...

I think the 3rd Gen Tacos looks better with color-keyed front bumpers, because with truck's streamlined design, the blackout trim doesn't blend very well...image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

    My truck...
    image.jpg

The '08 DSCB 4x4 I have photographed in its entirety many times before...
    image.jpg

The 2nd Gen Tacos (as well as the 1st Gens) have a more angular, boxy, chiseled look, and just wear the black bumper better in my opinion...

Here's another story of a weirdo who'd show up at my place of employment from time to time...

On this particular night, I was here as a customer and not an employee. I may have not been working there yet, but I know I'd become well-liked enough by then that the woman who would eventually become my boss always let me into shows without paying the cover charge.

So, I was hanging out by the hostess stand when this short, older middle-aged man (45-54) shows up. He was quite well-dressed, wearing a suit and leather jacket, but it was easy to tell just by looking at him that he had developmental issues of some sort. I forget whether my boss or one of the other ladies was hostessing, but either way this guy walks up to the hostess stand. He was super-awkward when conversing with the hostess, but he took out a huge wad of cash and paid the cover, so he got in...

Later that night, I was sitting at the bar when the same guy ordered a drink. He wasn't trying to be rude, but he was very socially awkward and made the bartender (a gorgeous Hawaiian/Norwegian woman in her early 40s, named Charlene) uneasy.

After he left the bar with whatever random but oddly specific mixed drink he'd ordered, Char turns to me and asks "Charlie, did that guy pay to get in?"

I informed Char that this guy had, in fact, paid to get in...

If you don't interrupt the bartender while he or she is taking another customer's order, that's a good start...

If you leave a good tip in addition to being polite, all of your shortcomings are generally forgiven...

If I remember correctly, this guy did not interrupt Char, but he also did not tip her!

People with mental problems and developmental disabilities have this mystical ability of unwittingly slipping past the host/hostess on a night when there's a cover charge. This is why Char was curious to know how he'd gotten in...

I recently told you guys about a former bartender at my work who bitched to me about one of my friends who didn't tip her...

Yes, it was quite unprofessional when she knew the poor bastard was my friend...

Also, college students who pound beers, rip shots, and don't tip are to be expected...

An out-of-towner who shows up, gets hammered, and doesn't tip is not a big deal, either...

It's the easily-recognizable locals who come in all the time and don't tip...

    It's not an oversight either...

    These twats just don't tip!
