This is copy/pasted directly from my planned autobiography...

In preschool, I did things that landed me in timeout, but I generally behaved myself. I got into stupid little disagreements with other little kids about the stupid little things that little kids regularly fight over. My dad bought me model cars and trucks all the time when I was younger, and one of my favorites was a model Chevy pickup. It was a plastic model kit that my dad bought for me, and he put it together for me. The kids at my school regularly brought personal toys in to play with, or for show-and-tell. When I was probably not even five years old, I brought my little bluish green Chevy C1500 pickup in one day, and everything initially went great. By the way, I got the truck in question as a Christmas present from my day in 1993. This incident happened sometime in 1994...

The preschool was run by an organization called KenCrest that specialized in helping individuals with special needs, ranging from toddlers all the way up to senior citizens. In my class, there were kids with Aspergers like me, as well as kids with other autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, and Tourette’s, among other things. There was this one girl named Samantha who was very weird. I do not remember what she actually had in terms of disabilities or disorders, but she had some sort of developmental disability.

Anyway, on the day I brought my beloved Chevy pickup into preschool, she almost sent it to the metaphorical junkyard. I remember that we were in the pretend kitchen, I think we were talking, and all of a sudden she shouted “Mine!” and grabbed my truck from me. I do not remember if we started fighting over it and I tried to grab it back from her, but the next thing I knew she smashed it against the toy oven and the bed and rear bumper came completely off. I do not think she meant to break my truck, but it was still broken. I just burst into tears and started crying. I do not remember trying to hit Samantha or anything. I just cried. One of the teachers, Miss Joan, gathered up the pieces of my truck and put it in a plastic bag so nothing would get lost. I calmed down, Samantha apologized, and when I got home my dad was able to fix my truck good as new with a little superglue. I think I handled that situation pretty well. Any kid would have cried their eyes out if they saw their favorite toy truck broken right in front of them, and in the end my dad wound up fixing it. I don’t even think I broke that truck as a result of excessive playtime, which is unusual. With the exception of Hot Wheels and similar toy vehicles, the typical toy car or truck did not last long in my hands. It is possible that it got packed away and is still in my parents’ basement. Either that or I sold it at a garage sale back in the 1990s. I actually found another one just like it at a garage sale in 2006 or 2007, and ironically, I believe I wound up breaking it by mistake while trying to “restore” it.

I attended kindergarten at a private school in Bucks County. Back then, it was called Carefree, and its logo was a sun rising over the ocean if I remember correctly. In addition to kindergarten-age classes, it was also a preschool and daycare facilities. One class was just for babies that were probably no more than a year old. There were a few occasions where I ended up in timeout or was given a stern talking to by my teacher, but only one incident ever occurred at that school that I feel horrible about and wish I could take back...

There was a kid named Jerry in my class who was roughly my age, and all I remember about him is that he liked trains about as much as I liked cars and trucks. We got into some sort of disagreement during outdoor playtime and he wouldn’t let me into this clubhouse structure on the playground...

I do not know what hell possessed me to do this, but I bit him, somewhere between his shoulder and his neck.

To this day I feel absolutely horrible about doing that, even though I was like five years old and could still use the excuse of not knowing any better. Jerry started crying, and I started crying, and the teacher separated us. My mom took me home early, and she was absolutely horrified about what I had done. I think she was crying during the ride home as well. I was well-liked among the kids in that class, thought I didn’t really realize how true this was until I saw how sad they were when I moved to a public school for first grade.

Jerry and I wound up being fine with each other after that incident. We did not have the type of friendship where we were inseparable and went over to each other’s houses on a regular basis, but we made up and got along fine after that. I even think he was somewhat sad to see me leave the first time. I finished the first grade in June 1996, and by that time my parents were preparing to move back to Northern California. For reasons unknown, my mom sent me back to Carefree for the last month or two we were in Pennsylvania. I was put back in the same class, with the same teacher, and most of the same classmates, including Jerry. I do not remember why my parents sent me back to Carefree, and neither does my mom. When I asked my mom about it, the two of us came to the conclusion that Carefree held some sort of summer daycare group, and my parents enrolled me in it so I would have something to do while they were getting the house in North Wales ready for sale. I could also reconnect with my teacher and former classmates. I forget whether Jerry was younger than me and still in kindergarten, if he was the same age as me and held back, or if he was like me and his parents had enrolled him in the class for the summer. Anyway, I was warmly welcomed back into the class, and I had a lot of fun.

Also, leave it to me to remember something in my childhood because of a car or truck, but that’s how I did put a time line of sorts in place. In June 1993, my dad bought a brand new 1993 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. My mom’s car was a 1990 Toyota Camry that she bought brand new and had until 1998. I loved the Blazer so much that my parents would occasionally switch vehicles so my mom could drive me to school in the Blazer. Most of the time, however, my dad took the Blazer to work and my mom had the Camry. My dad traded the Blazer for a brand new 1996 Nissan Pathfinder in late May, 1996. When I was enrolled in kindergarten at Carefree from 1994 to 1995, my dad still had the Blazer. I was not yet finished with first grade when he traded the Blazer for the Pathfinder. I distinctly remember being picked up Carefree in the Pathfinder several times, so it had to have been after May of 1996. Speaking of cars, I regularly brought toy cars into school both during kindergarten and during the 1996 summer school after I finished first grade. My classmates, including Jerry, loved it. One of my models was a 1:18 scale die cast metal Dodge Ram pickup, black with chrome wheels. I loved that truck, and it was one of the many I brought into school. I can remember Jerry being absolutely fascinated with that Dodge, taking it for a drive around the carpeted area of classroom on his hands and knees, and then taking a look under the hood. It was an incredibly well-detailed model, with a hood that opened to reveal an equally well-detailed engine. Those were the good old days. When we moved, I can vaguely remember a going away party being thrown for me by the class, and one thing I do remember is bringing in a portion of my collection of Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars and letting each of my classmates keep one to remember me by. I cherish my cars and very rarely do I just give them away. I’ve sold a bunch of them at various garage sales over the years, but I almost never give them away. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Carefree, and I still feel awful about biting Jerry. He forgave me and we got along well after that, but I still feel awful. Jerry, if you ever read this book, I want you to know that I apologize from the bottom of my heart and hope you have done something good with your life.

Underpowered gas hog that had no reason being used. The 360 was powerful enough in those trucks and the Cummins well is a Cummins...

You mean into the tornado at the end of the movie? And I don't know if you remember this, but early on in the movie, Helen Hunt's character asks him if he has full coverage on that truck. Bill responds by saying "liability only." I'm guessing a truck like that (1995 Dodge Ram 2500 club cab SLT Laramie long bed 4x4 with V10 and automatic) cost about $25K new, so that must've sucked!

Well, you're only required to have full coverage on a vehicle if it's being financed...

I've met a couple of guys who are huge car nuts and have lots of nice cars, and if they are involved in a wreck (especially single-vehicle), they find it cheaper to pay out of pocket for repairs...

But in tornado-prone Oklahoma, why would you only have liability insurance on a brand new truck?
