Once I have kids I know that'll be a big change for me...

PennDOT and the PLCB (Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board) still have a Gestapo-like grip on regulations and punishments regarding alcohol offenses...

Many of my friends got their licenses suspended for underage drinking when they were nowhere near a motor vehicle!

LOL I thought you were talking about drinking and liquor laws!

Having a wife and kids will probably curb both my drinking and my truck modifications!

well it hasnt curbed the drinking, because my wife is a big craft beer fan too. Albeit my drinking has never been out out control, even though I drink regularly. As far as truck modifications, I try to keep my daily driver as dependable as possible because its what gets me to my job to help provide for my family, and it also totes us around, so I dont need something heavily modified with a larger potential for failure

Well yea, but when we go out I limit myself so Im not in a position of requiring a DD. I choose to have all of my faculties in the event something happens to my wife or my child, I am able to handle the situation accordingly. Now if we are home, and I know we are staying home I will get down like charlie brown.

Like I said above, what really annoys me about law enforcement and drunk driving laws is that everything has become too politicized.

One of my coworkers got pull over on a whim (she wasn't doing anything wrong, she was just a young person driving a $500 shitbox late at night). She was 20 years old, and the cop made her take a breathalyzer. She blew a .02, and got a DUI. Her license was suspended for two months, and she ended up having to pay like $10K in various fees.

I think that age is just a number, and besides, the minimum drinking age in Europe is 18. I would be lying if I told you I didn't drink with friends before I was 21, but I didn't get my driver's license until I was 22. I've lost count of the number of times I drove home with a BAC of anywhere from .02 to just under the legal limit when I was young (I don't do this anymore).

It is my honest-to-goodness opinion that the legal system does a better of job of keeping the less fortunate down than reforming so-called criminals...

I mean ten grand?!?! When my coworker was just three weeks away from turning 21 and would have been sent on her way if she blew the same BAC at age 21?!?!

Above, I said that the legal system in this country seems to do a better job of keeping the poor (or otherwise less fortunate) down than it does of actually making a difference and helping people learn from their mistakes...

When it comes to the legal system, crime and punishment, etc... Ethan Couch is a perfect example. At 16 years old, the bastard killed like 5 people while driving drunk and got through it with what in my opinion is a slap on the wrist. Why? He's a spoiled brat with rich parents who hired a very good lawyer. A poor person gets pulled over and they've had a few too many to drink but haven't crashed or hit anybody, and they don't have enough money to pay for a good lawyer.

The asshole who hit my truck in October 2015 was not only a repeat offender, but the previous offense had resulted in an innocent life being lost. He hired a good lawyer and had to pay substantial fines (not included lawyer fees), but only lost his license for a year and had to serve 40 days in jail (to be served on weekends and not all at once; WTF?).

They lose their license for however many months, and serve out the suspension, but then they can't afford the fees to get it back. They can drive anyway, but their license is still technically suspended and if they get caught they're facing even more consequences. In Pennsylvania, getting caught driving on a suspended license results in an automatic 1-year suspension on top of whatever the existing suspension was, and regardless of what their license was suspended for. In Pennsylvania, you can lose your license for stupid non-driving offenses like underage drinking and defaulting on child support payments! One of my former coworkers ended up getting his license suspended for two years because he got a ticket for an expired inspection sticker and forgot about it, then unknowing drove on a suspended license. He went to the DMV and got everything sorted out. The DMV gave him back his license for some reason and gave him the impression everything was good, even though it was still suspended. He got pulled over again because a bored cop ran his license plate and found that the registered owner (him) had a suspended license. This meant another year of suspension. The inspection sticker incident happened in 2013 or 2014, and he just got his license back in late 2016!

Another friend of mine was driving a rich friend's Jeep Wrangler a few years back, and neglected to notice that the inspection had expired. He had a few drinks and made a run to the local convenience store, and the police pulled him over because of the expired inspection sticker. He showed signs of intoxication, failed a sobriety test, and was charged with DUI. He served out his suspension, which technically ended over a year ago! However, he lives with his dad in an apartment, and due to various expenses associated with renting an apartment and his dad's health issues, he can't afford to pay the roughly $1,600 needed to reinstate his driver's license!

The sad truth about the world we live in today is that you have to be rich and/or know the right people to keep yourself from getting entangled in the bureaucracy of the United States Legal System these days...

I have never been drunk. I drink rarely, and I get buzzed from one tall beer or a couple of regular ones, so that’s where I stop. I wait until that buzz is completely gone before I drive.

I’ve only been pulled over a few times. Once for no registration on brother’s car, and four times for speeding, 83 in 75, 60 in 35, 53 in 40, 81 in 65. The 60 in 35 is a frontage rd/feeder/access rd, where everyone drives 50-60, and they were just targeting that day because of complaints. The cop was nice enough to lower my recorded speed to 50, so it didn’t count as reckless driving. In all cases, the cops were courteous, and some even thanked me for my cooperation.

The one bad interaction with a cop was just me being a complete idiot. I walked up to a cop car at gas station and asked why they were not ticketing people driving fast in that area. (This was very soon after I had gotten ticketed there.) He was visibly annoyed (for good reason) and told me he didn’t work traffic, and to file a complaint with police department. Just walking up to a cop sitting in a car is dumb enough, because it threatens their safety and puts them on the defensive. To then ask them why they’re not doing their job is piling on more shit, so that was extremely dumb.

The legal system is indeed quite counterproductive a lot of the time. Taking one of your examples, taking away license for not paying child-support is so stupid. How the heck are they supposed to pay if you make it harder for them to work.

If I hadn't been able to fight my one and only speeding ticket, I would have gotten four points on my driver's license. In Pennsylvania, three points are deducted for every year without a driving-related conviction. One point I could have dealt with, but this was four points! If I managed to make it a year without any convictions, three of the four points would go away in May 2018. However, this still left one more point that would be there until May 2019. My current driver's license expires in March 2019, on my 30th birthday. This meant I would've had four points on my record at the time of my next license renewal!

Also, in Pennsylvania the way it works is if you get six or more points, you may have to attend a departmental hearing and take what is known as a special points examination. Basically, you have to go to the DMV, and take the goddamn written test again! You have so long to schedule this otherwise your license gets suspended until you do take the exam. If it's the first accumulation of six points and/or a minor/first offense, they might go easy and not make you take the exam. If required, taking the exam will knock a couple of points off your license.

Six or more points does not mean that you have to take the exam, or that your license will be suspended; But if you get convicted of an offense that results in your license being suspended while you have six or more points, then you have to take the exam before your license will be reinstated or wait until you get below six points. This is what happened to my former coworker with the forgotten inspection sticker ticket...

An accumulation of eleven points is an automatic license suspension (you'd have to be one hell of a bad driver to rack up that many points)! Also in Pennsylvania, if you get so many moving violations or so many DUIs, your license gets revoked and after a certain amount of time you have to reapply for a learner's permit and take the road test again.

    Exactly!

Some states will also suspend licenses for missing so many payments on student loans!
