UPDATE (March 14th, 2018): I didn't think it was anything major...

My truck passed PA safety inspection last October, so I had no reason to think it was anything serious. It was obnoxious at best, but my dad drove the truck on Tuesday and heard the noises for himself. It is normal for brakes to squeak under certain circumstances, but yesterday (which happened to be my 29th birthday), I'd finally had it. The truck was not performing any worse, but the noises were getting more and more pronounced. I called Thompson Toyota while still at work and they were able to fit me in immediately. I was expected that something needed to be tightened, or a part had to be replaced, and it would be a few hundred bucks at most. I dropped the truck off at like 6pm on Wednesday evening and expected to get it back Thursday night at the latest.

Thompson's service department called me on Thursday (March 15th) at work, and it turned out my front brakes are totally shot (they were at least 50% life last October). The left front caliper seized and this caused the pads to just evaporate. The right front caliper was at 25% life or so. So yeah, my front brakes are pretty much GONE. Almost $1,300 to fix!

ORIGINAL POST: Recently, I've been noticing a high-pitched squeaking from the rear area of my truck...

The other day I had a coworker get behind the wheel and pull the truck forward and backward while I got down on my hands and knees and listened...

I determined that the squeak is definitely coming from somewhere in the rear axle or rear suspension.

My truck passed the PA state inspection with flying colors last October and the rear brakes have probably 60-65% life left (original to truck).

My truck does not rattle or shake and the squeak simply annoys the shit out of me. I do not feel like the truck is unsafe to drive.

Just moments ago I was driving down a hill, approaching a red light, with my foot on the brake. The squeak was more of a whine.

    This what's odd...

Sometimes the squeaks and whines are nonexistent, and sometimes they're quite pronounced, with many variants...

I'm trying to wait until my truck needs its next oil change (which won't be until 85K miles), but I don't know if I can wait that long because it's getting warm out and I like driving around with the windows down!

Driveshft u joints or center carrier bearing. You can try greasing u joints might fix the problem for a period of time.

You can also try adjusting rear brakes

If you've been offroading recently spray out your leaf springs. They are notorious for squeakage when shit gets caught in them.

I can do that, but is there a specific grease I need to use?

Also, I'm working right now (and working for me means driving around town running errands), so I'm gonna have to wait until the truck cools down a bit.

I know what U-joints are, but what is a carrier bearing?

No center carrier bearing for you... reg cabs do not have them so you can ignore that. If you don't know what grease to use, I would think you don't own a grease gun, in that case you may be better off just having a shop do it real quick, or if you have a friend that wrenches... Literally takes 2 minute if they dont put it on a lift... If you can find someone that will except cash Id bet they would do it for 10$ just pull into a small privately owned garage and ask someone.

And also if you're truck has 80k on it and you have never had them greased I bet thats your problem.

i bet it is a leaf spring. take a look at the front and back of the springs. their are little U shaped brackets with rubber tips on them to keep the spings in line. if the spring gets out of line and rubs on the bracket you can develop a squeak. just take a big rubber mallet and knock the leafs back in line. i've done this twice. once before and after my frame replacement

It's been greased for sure. I have all paperwork going back to new, and I believe it was greased when my frame was sprayed under recall last October...

Is that some sort of innuendo or are you being serious?

    Why aren't they greaseable?

i can't tell from teh pix if they are rubbing or not. you should be able to eyeball them and see if there is any fresh rub.

I know mine all were, but Im guessing some weren't from the factory. If you look at the U-joints (on the driveshaft) you would be able to see a little nipple somewhere... Also if they have been greased, there will usually be a stain around the u joint from the excess grease spraying your undercarriage.
